With just 3 days left to enter the Governor’s Cup Yacht Race 2014, the build up has already begun with a special event on the RMS St Helena, where the winner’s trophy was handed over to St Helenian and RMS Hotel Services Director Jackie Leo, ready to begin its journey from Cape Town to St Helena.

The prospects for any wind didn't look great on Saturday morning for the combined RS800 Grand Prix, Merlin Rocket Silver Tiller and Bart's Bash race at Lymington Town Sailing Club, but thankfully it got better through the weekend.

Northampton Sailing Club hosted the RS Feva Volvo Grand Prix and Bart’s Bash event on September 20/21, with 39 competitors from around the country. The event was the final RYA UK Junior Squad selector, so added an extra pressure to some of the sailors.

The K6 class held their class championship over 4 days at the Stone Sailing club on the Blackwater Estuary. It also produced a NE gradient breeze that started the event off with a 5 – 8 knot wind building through the 4 days to a 20 knot thriller on the last day.

On a dim Saturday morning in September the Notts County Junior Race Training squad showed their talents off to the 14 Notts County home boats and 14 visitors, for final round of the Northern Tour. As the juniors headed home to complete their homework the 400s tucked into bacon and eggs care of the galley.

The Volvo Ocean Race has become so technologically advanced that having a dependable power supply is second only to having a good wind for the fleet. The super-fast and ultra-light Volvo Ocean 65s carry the minimal amount of fuel and drinking water possible to minimize weight, so without reliable power, much of the equipment, including for example, the water makers, wouldn’t actually work.

The 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 Circuit will be drawing to a finish next month, with the final event of the series running in conjunction with the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo at the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).  The 2014 racing has been dominated by the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club backed team from Russia on board Swan 60 Bronenosec.

At 0800 BST on Tuesday 19th August nine yachts were still racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Ifan James, skipper of Stimpson 42 Palpatine, contacted the Royal Ocean Racing Club yesterday to retire from the race with all crew well. Palpatine left the Isle of Lewis in the early hours of Tuesday morning and is currently passing the Isle of Skye, east of the Outer Hebrides.
