Youth and Junior racing forms an important part of the events calendar at The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) and this year is proving to be no exception. 2014 has seen the Academy host a wide variety of major events ranging from weekend Grand Prix to National and World Championships, featuring many of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Youth and Junior Classes.

At 0800 BST on Tuesday 19th August nine yachts were still racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Ifan James, skipper of Stimpson 42 Palpatine, contacted the Royal Ocean Racing Club yesterday to retire from the race with all crew well. Palpatine left the Isle of Lewis in the early hours of Tuesday morning and is currently passing the Isle of Skye, east of the Outer Hebrides.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's Volvo Ocean 65, Azzam, skippered by Ian Walker, crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 22.20.28 BST on Friday 15th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 4 days, 13 hours, 10 minutes, 28 seconds.

Helly Hansen ambassador and Olympic hopeful, Chris Russell will be attempting a World Record for ‘the longest single handed, non-stop distance sailed, unassisted in a dinghy’ throughout Wednesday 20 August and Thursday 21 August. The current world record, according to Guinness, is 282 nautical miles and Chris is aiming to sail 300 miles, under the campaign name Force300.

At 0700 BST, Musandam-Oman Sail was just 100 miles from finishing the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. The MOD 70 was experiencing about 15 knots of northwesterly winds in the English Channel. Musandam-Oman Sail was still achieving a speed of 25 knots but the wind angle meant a considerable number of gybes, drastically reducing their VMG.

MOD 70 Musandam-Oman Sail, skippered by Frenchman Sidney Gavignet, is now over 40 miles ahead of the Volvo 65 fleet and has averaged an astonishing 27 knots since the start. At that speed, Musandam-Oman Sail will finish the race in 2 days and 18 hours, smashing the race and course record.

Tomorrow sees the launch of MDL Marinas’ new charity initiative - My MDL Selfie – challenging berth holders, marina visitors and boating enthusiasts to get snapping this summer. In aid of Ocean Youth Trust South, MDL Marinas has pledged to donate £1* for every selfie received via social media using the hashtag #MyMDLSelfie.

Earlier today Nick Elliott, RORC Racing Manager explained the decision to delay the start of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race by 21 hours. The postponed start will take place on Monday 11 August at 0900.

Today was really the longest day for the 1,600 boats taking part in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. With light winds affecting the 15,000 sailors taking part, it produced some spectacular images as the fleet bunched up at the Needles because of a lack of wind.

The longest day of the summer came close to delivering the longest J.P.Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race ever, writes Kate Laven, as winds ranging from zero knots to painfully light tested the patience of crews with high performance catamaran Team Richard Mille emerging as line honours winner with a time of almost nine hours.
