Race News - Southsea Grand Prix 2007
New Leaders in 2007 Zapcats National Championship
Tuesday, 26  June 2007

An untimely flip in the Division One final of Round Three of the 2007 Zapcats National Championships meant leaders 98 Team Suffolk had to stand back and watch rivals 8 Pegasus Vortex Racing move ahead of them in the Championship table at the end of the first day’s racing at Southsea.

The father and son pairing of Greg and Keiron Richardson had again dominated the racing in increasingly choppy conditions. But, catching a wave awkwardly on the first lap of the Division One final, they overturned and had to watch last season’s Rookies of the Year, Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns, power ahead of them to take Round Three and the all-important Championship points.

A disappointing end to the day, too, for Division Two leaders, 40 Scaredy Cat, driven by the husband and wife team of Russell and Sandra Sidney. With 12 boats taking part in Heat 16, there was a certain amount of jostling as they fought for the best line around one of the marks on the course. The result, a popped tube on Scaredy Cat’s hull and an abrupt end to the day’s racing. They’re hoping to have it repaired for Round Four of the 2007 Zapcat National Championships, which gets underway at midday today.

One person who won’t be taking part in today’s racing is rookie, Lee Bryant, who was piloting Zapcat 29 Inventi when a freak accident left him with a broken leg. The Zapcats safety team, which includes two paramedics, were with him within 30 seconds and had radioed for an ambulance before he was even off the water. Lee is recovering in hospital but is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

The heats in Round Four of the 2007 Zapcats National Championship continue from midday today (Sunday 24) before the action moves north of the border and the flat-water conditions of the Clyde at the Glasgow River Festival on 14 and 15 July.
