Cowes Week Limited is appealing to the local business community, sailors, and members of the public to show their support for the traditional Cowes Week fireworks display by making an online donation to a new fund that has been set up to help raise money for the event.

There has already been a significant contribution towards the cost of the extravaganza from a generous anonymous donor, and the 3,591 members of a new Facebook group, Save Cowes Week Fireworks, have pledged to contribute towards the display.  However, there are still considerable funds to be raised.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE - ERICSSON 4 CLAIM LEG 6
26 April 2009 (470 reads)

Their boat speed and crew skill has never been in question, but today, as Ericsson 4 claimed leg six in the most dramatic of finishes, Torben Grael's team proved they also have resolve in abundance.

It had been three legs since they last claimed offshore line honours, dating back to November 30 when they led the fleet into Cochin at the end of the second stage.

And for the majority of this leg, they hardly looked like breaking the run. As recently as April 20 - some nine days after leaving Rio de Janeiro - they were fourth, occasionally as much as 112 miles behind long-time leader Telefonica Blue.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE - STORMING TOWARDS BOSTON
25 April 2009 (438 reads)

Temperatures on board are dropping and the pressure is rising with the fleet closing in on Boston. As the leaders leave the warm waters of the Gulf Stream behind, the sea temperature has plummeted.

But relief is in sight. In Boston, as the race village opens to the public today, the warm spring afternoon is forecast to approach the historical record high for the day.

Out on the race track, some 300 miles away, and as reported by Mark Chisnell in this morning's TEN ZULU, the leaders have been fighting through a ridge of high pressure for most of the day. Their progress has been slowed dramatically by the light conditions. The final miles to Boston will be hard-earned.

ASYLUM SEEKERS KILLED IN HORRIFIC BLAZE
23 April 2009 (323 reads)

Petrol is believed to have been introduced into the bilges of an asylum-seeker boat minutes before it exploded last Thursday, killing five of those on board off the coast of Northern Australia.

As the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promised closer co-operation to stamp out people-smuggling yesterday, senior government sources told that a strong build-up of petrol vapours was emerging as the likely cause of the fatal blast.

The Prime Minister spoke by telephone with Mr Yudhoyono yesterday afternoon and the pair agreed "push factors", including the conflicts in Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, were the main reason for the surge in asylum-seeker arrivals in recent weeks.

SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON CELEBRATES THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HISTORIC VOYAGE
22 April 2009 (338 reads)

Pictured with two of the new generation of solo sailors, Dee Caffari and Steve White the sailing legend marks his unprecedented British success in the 1969 Sunday Times Golden Globe yacht race in central London.

On April 22 1969, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston made history as the first man to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. He was the only competitor to finish the Sunday Times Golden Globe yacht race after 312 days alone at sea and to this day remains the only British sailor to win a single-handed round the world race.

April 22 2009 saw the pioneering skipper mark the 40-year anniversary of this incredible accomplishment in central London. Having once again sailed alone around the planet only two years ago at the age of 68 in the VELUX 5 OCEANS, Sir Robin brought his original boat from 1969, Suhaili, up to Tower Bridge.

NEW AIS400 FROM DIGITAL YACHT
21 April 2009 (964 reads)

Digital Yacht has launched a new high performance dual channel AIS receiver called the AIS400.  AIS receivers pick up signals from any vessel equipped with an AIS Class A or B transponder (mandatory on vessels over 300GRT) and send the vessel’s identity, position, course and speed over VHF frequencies.

Hook up an AIS receiver to a compatible plotter and you’ll see an overlay of nearby targets typically up to 20-30NM.

It’s like adding radar to your chart plotter with the added bonus of positive identification.  The AIS400 has connections for both a regular chart plotter via NMEA and also a USB connection for a PC based plotter system such as Maxsea, Seapro, Maptech and Nobeltec.

NEW SCORPION 6.5M ENCOURAGES MORE AFFORDABLE RIBBING
20 April 2009 (764 reads)

To date Scorpion has always built its RIBs to order. As part of its growth plans however, the company is introducing a limited range of standard boats. The first of these is an updated version of the 6.5 metre, a model that was last produced from the Lymington-based yard in 2001.

According to Patrick Byrne of Scorpion RIBs: “The 6.5m was a very popular boat. We have had many requests for its re–introduction and the originals are in high demand. We are expanding our sales base and introducing a range of products that customers can buy ‘off the shelf’. The 6.5m is a good place to start. This boat is competitively priced and in the past the residual values have held up very well, so it is an ideal Scorpion starter boat …until of course you get drawn into the attractions of long distant ribbing.”

VOLVO OCEAN RACE - TELEFONICA BLUE'S BOOTY
16 April 2009 (511 reads)

Telefonica Blue was first to the scoring gate at Fernando de Noronha tonight. The Spanish boat crossed the landmark at the South Atlantic archipelago at 19:58 GMT.

Bouwe Bekking and his men pick up four points for their efforts. Their lead over second-placed Ericsson 4 was 22 miles at the point of reaching Noronha. Delta Lloyd was seven miles further adrift and Telefonica Black one mile behind.

It was the second time Bekking had been first to reach Noronha after a similar feat on Leg 1 in the 2005-06 race. On that occasion, he pipped ABN AMRO ONE (re-invented as Delta Lloyd in 2008-09) for the points.
