The Island Sailing Club has now processed just over 1,470 entries and amongst some of the most recent it is interesting to note that, for one reason or another, a fair few have an association with flying. We’re also starting to see some of the more high profile entries coming in now, along with one or two speed machines. There’s also a brilliant turnout of young sailing talent signing up.
Skipper Graham Tourell will be helming Artemis Ocean Racing, an Imoca 60. Built in 2008 the boat has also competed in the Vendée Globe and 2009 Transat Jacques Vabres. Open 60s are one of the fastest boats in sailing - built in carbon fibre using the latest hi-tech structures, they are designed to be as light as possible for speed’s sake, but strong enough to withstand the worst the seas can throw at them.
MDL owned and operated Sparkes Marina recently completed the first phase of a £600,000 maintenance project. In advance of the main boating season, a full dredge of the marina removed 6,000m³ of silt, which equates to just over two 50m long swimming pools, reinstating the design bed levels throughout the basin and ensuring full tidal access to all berths.
The marina also completed the first stage of a rolling programme of replacing all pontoons, pontoon equipment and mooring piles, which will be carried out over the coming years.
The Race Collection was launched by Gill in early 2010 – after two years’ thorough research, resulting in a lightweight, technical clothing range specifically designed to provide a team look for racing in warm conditions.
As with the complete Race Collection range, the Race Short Sleeve T, Race Long Sleeve T, Race Polo are all made from quick drying, ultra-lightweight fabric, which actively wicks moisture away form the skin and has a UV factor of 50+, the best sun-protection there is.
The important left chest area has been left free for team branding or personalisation.
A fleet of six Simon Rogers-designed Artemis 20 keelboats, helmed by qualified UKSA skippers and crewed by 12 novice sailors from a mixed background of disability or disadvantage, will compete for the inaugural Artemis Even Keel Challenge Trophy over two days at Cowes Week in early August. The race winners from Day 1 will then be joined by some of the leading names in sailing for what is set to be a highly competitive Pro-Am finale on Day 2. Each celebrity sailor will guest helm on the final race. Steve White and Brian Thompson are already in place and Dee Caffari and Mike Golding have agreed to race depending on their final sponsor commitments.
The use and carriage of flares as distress signals at sea has changed as more robust and technologically advanced alternatives have developed.
As a result the RYA has revised its advice to mariners regarding the carriage and use of flares in combination with more modern alerting methods such as EPIRB’s and VHF DSC.
The new guidelines, for skippers of pleasure craft under 13.7m in length, provide information on the combinations of equipment you could consider carrying and using depending upon the type of your vessel and where you use it.
This weekend (29-30 May) sees the RYA Powerboat Circuit Racers head to Carr Mill, in St Helens as the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club hosts round two of the RYA National Championship.
With all the National classes still having everything to play for in the campaign to become 2010 National Champions the action throughout the weekend will be fast and furious.
The Green Blue, the environmental programme of the RYA and BMF, is pleased to announce the launch of its brand new website, www.thegreenblue.org.uk
Thanks to funding from The Crown Estate’s Marine Stewardship Fund and technical support from the BMF (British Marine Federation), The Green Blue’s brand new website has a fresh new look, new content and layout updates.
