The RYA is urging boaters to observe the Voluntary No Anchor Zone (VNAZ) that has been set up in Studland Bay, Dorset by The Crown Estate and Natural England as part of the ‘Studland Bay Seagrass Project’.
Studland Bay is shallow, sandy embayment on the south coast of England and is an important site for seagrass and seahorses, both of which are protected by law due to their relative scarcity around the UK.
The recent addition of seahorses to the list of protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act has led to concerns over the possible impacts of recreational boat anchoring and mooring on seagrass meadows in Studland Bay.
Cowes, Isle of Wight: Sunday dawned bright, warm and sunny as hundreds of competitors from the 79th edition of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race headed for the Island Sailing Club (ISC) to the event prizegiving to be honoured with their gold and silverware spoils after a superbly successful J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race yesterday.
The race is being regarded by Organisers, Sponsors, Race Partners and the all-important 1700+ competitors as one of the most successful on record.
With spinnakers flying and some competitive close quarters racing, the transatlantic chase began as the Clipper fleet set sail from Sydney, Cape Breton Island, to hunt down Cork, Ireland, in Race 12 of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race. Under blue skies and in a breeze of five to ten knots from the south, the nine yachts crossed the start line at 1400 local time (1700 GMT). They were set on their way by race founder and chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who fired one of the Fortress of Louisbourg¹s replica eight pound cannons to start the 2,080-mile race to Kinsale, Co Cork, Ireland.
A new name in marine communications has been launched specialising in the design and development of advanced communication and safety products.
The directors of the company, Ocean Signal, have brought together one of the most highly experienced electronic engineering teams in the marine communications industry.
Individually they have designed and developed many of the market leading products and now, as Ocean Signal, bring a fresh approach to safety at sea for commercial, fishing and leisure craft.
Everyone is celebrating this year’s Race as being one of the most successful on record. Not only did the weather gods play fair, the racing was extremely close throughout the day proven by the tight finishes in most classes and the competitors came ashore happy and proud of their efforts whether first in class or trailing the fleet.
For once, most of the boats finished before sunset and in a fleet of nearly 1700 boats, that’s pretty unusual.

Southampton based Discovery Yachts has added the option of a new look to its popular, award winning, Discovery 55. Taking some of the design elements of the much praised Discovery 67 which was launched last year, the company has incorporated an option which can provide the modern treatment of the 67 look to the Discovery 55. The classic 55 design will remain as the standard build.
Managing Director, Nigel Stuart explains, "Many of our owners had seen the sleek appearance of the Discovery 67 at the Southampton Boat Show and we were asked if some of the design elements could be adapted for the 55.
