COWES WEEK ON COURSE FOR A SPECTACULAR 2010

The latest news, and course & class updates

This Saturday the largest sailing regatta of its kind, Cowes Week, kicks off for its 184th year.

This year Cowes Week welcomes a number of new classes and has made several improvements to ensure that 2010 is the best regatta yet.

At the current time, entries are in great shape at 893, with more still coming in*. Cowes Week is firmly on track to be another cracker!

Streaming now!  With memorable material stretching back over the years, Cowes Radio is already streaming on the Internet. “With over a million minutes downloaded last Cowes Week, and the explosion of audio visual media content on the Internet this decade, I’m confident we’ll see that record truly smashed!” commented Steve Ancsell, the “Godfather’ of Cowes Radio.

Cowes Radio celebrates 25 years at the worlds’ greatest regatta, Cowes Week, and goes on air this Friday on 87.7FM as the longest running RSL station in the UK.

Following a successful partnership in 2009, Cowes Week Limited and Solent Productions - a Southampton Solent University Enterprise Centre – have teamed up again for the 2010 regatta.

Media students at Southampton Solent University will gain valuable hands-on experience through the provision of television production and broadcast support to one of the most high profile events in the yachting calendar.

COWES RADIO CELBRATES 25 YEARS

Cowes Radio, the longest running Special Event Radio Station in the UK, is an award winning and integral part of Cowes Week and celebrates its 25th birthday during the forthcoming July 31st to August 7th 2010 regatta.

Streamed on the internet around the world at www.cowesradio.co.uk and listened to by many thousands of competitors and spectators attending Cowes Week on 87.7fm through speakers on Cowes Parade, the Green and through personal earpieces on the boats, the reporting and programme content provides an eclectic mix of regatta highlights, interviews and entertainment. More crucial information is included for competitors, with dedicated and detailed local weather reports, tide times and the all-important race results being broadcast.

ROLEX COMMODORES’ CUP DRAWS SOUTH AFRICA

There are only a few weeks to the close of entries at this year’s Rolex Commodores’ Cup. Whilst most teams have finalized their boats and crews, others are still engaged in discussions to determine their line-ups. For all teams, both settled and prospective, certain things are set in stone.

Most importantly there must be three boats, one in each of the stipulated rating bands, and, all teams must be on the starting grid for the first race on Sunday, 15 August. At present, organisers’, the Royal Ocean Racing Club are expecting 11 teams representing France, Ireland, Hong Kong, South Africa and the United Kingdom to contest the international trophy.

NEW MARINA LAUNCH IN CYPRUS - LIMASSOL MARINA

The Limassol Marina launch event took place on Monday 5th July 2010.  The event marked the start of construction and first sales of residential units at Nereids Residences for the joint project between Camper & Nicholsons Marinas and Limassol Marina Ltd.

The two organisations signed an operating agreement earlier in the year with construction given the go ahead in March 2010.  With construction underway and two years of serious development to follow, Limassol Marina is set to be an exclusive waterfront development, with an enticing mix of boutiques, restaurants and shops.

PORTO SAN ROCCO NOW SELLING DUTY FREE FUEL

Huge savings to be made at Porto San Rocco Marina, on the coast of Italy, now selling duty free fuel to all vessels leaving the EU within eight hours of fuelling

Located in the Bay of Muggia, within the Gulf of Trieste, the position of Porto San Rocco in the northern Adriatic makes it the perfect base for cruising the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.  In June 2010 the marina has been granted permission to sell duty free fuel to all leisure craft and as Porto San Rocco is only 15 miles north east of Croatia, this leaves plenty of time to leave the EU within the eight hour time limit.

Roberto Sponza, Marina Director of Porto San Rocco said “This new ruling is fantastic news for all yachts passing through this area of the Adriatic.
