MIKE PERHAM RETURNS TO A HEROES WELCOME IN PORTSMOUTH

17 year-old British sailor Mike Perham returned to Portsmouth today to a heroes welcome from his parents Peter and Heather Perham, sister Fiona, and thousands of friends and well-wishers, after becoming the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world.

His 50ft yacht Totallymoney.com  had crossed the traditional Lizard/Ushant line marking the start and finish point of his 30,000 mile record-setting solo sailing circumnavigation at 09: 47.30BST last Thursday morning - two months inside the previous age record set by American teenager Zac Sutherland. Portsmouth however, marks the start and finish point of this 9 month odyssey, for Mark Perham set out from Gunwharf Quay on 15th November 2008.

SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR TO OPEN THE PSP SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW

The 2009 PSP Southampton Boat Show will be opened by Sophie Ellis-Bextor on Friday 11 September. The glamorous singer will officially kick off the 10-day marine extravaganza featuring the best of boating, watersports and lifestyle.

Sophie will sail into Mayflower Park aboard the dazzling new Princess 78 motor yacht, which will receive her global debut at the Show, to greet assembled photographers for a photo call on the marina at 10:00 hrs.

At 11:00 hrs Sophie will host the Show’s official opening on the Record Breaker Stage. She will pose for photographs and chat to the Show compere before cutting the ribbon and declaring the 2009 PSP Southampton Boat Show open.

ALEX THOMSON GOES KEEL WALKING AT 20 KNOTS

Having already tried his hand at foiling, last week round-the-world sailor Alex Thomson went keel walking on his IMOCA Open 60 HUGO BOSS in the Solent.

Alex explained: "I've wanted to stand on the keel while sailing for a couple of years, and last week in 17-20 knots of breeze I stood on the keel whilst sailing wearing a HUGO BOSS suit. It was pretty dangerous but a real buzz."

The plucky teenager had already entered the record books as the youngest person to sail single-handed across the Atlantic at age 14, but now enters them again having accomplished this ultimate achievement. Mike now holds the record, having spent 158 days at sea and being just 17 years and 164 days on completion.

Mike’s team chartered a water-ballasted Open 50, Totallymoney.com, for the journey, which came with a proven racing track-record - and was the boat in which JP Mouligne sailed the Round Alone event in 1998. Mike’s trip covered approximately 30,000 miles, taking Mike across the equator and every single line of longitude on the earth’s surface.

TEENAGER MIKE PERHAM BECOMES YOUNGEST ROUND THE WORLD SAILOR

17 year-old Mike Perham became the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world this morning. His 50ft yacht Totallymoney.com crossed the finish line at 09:47:30 local time.

The teenager from Potters Bar was escorted across the line by Royal Navy guard ship HMS Mersey, a Royal Naval helicopter, and a flotilla of press boats that had been on standby overnight to record his finish.

"I've made it, I've made my dream come true and it feels amazing," said Mike. "A BIG BIG thanks to my Dad, Mum, all the sponsors and every one who has helped me along the way. I can't believe that the Royal Navy has sent HMS Mersey and a helicopter to witness my crossing the line. I feel very honoured."

MIKE PERHAM PREPARES TO REWRITE THE RECORD BOOKS

17 year-old British sailor Mike Perham is now within a day of becoming the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world. He now expects his 50ft yacht Totallymoney.com  to reach the Lizard line marking the start and finish point of his 30,000 mile record-setting odyssey between 08:30 and 09:30 local Thursday morning - two months inside the current record.

Overnight, the teenager from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire has had to cope with the tail-end effects of Hurricane Bill which has now split into two distinct low pressure systems. The huge seas now running in the Western Approaches forced Mike to stay away from the Continental Shelf overnight but this is not expected to delay his arrival off Falmouth by very much.

OMAN SAIL'S NEW 100FT TRIMARAN MAKES FIRST SPLASH

The Arabian 100 hits the water for the first time in Oman on 23rd August 2009. It's a proud day for Oman as the Arabian 100 trimaran touches water for the very first time in Salalah Port. A team of up to 30 international and Omani boat builders and specialists have worked on her at any one time and the result is this phenomenal racing craft which is sure to be making headlines soon.

Oman Sail's new trimaran moves one step closer to being launched after it was wheeled out of the boat shed yesterday in Oman. A new flagship for Arabia, this new 105 foot trimaran, known as an Arabian 100 (A100), was built by Boat Speed in Australia before the components were shipped to Oman for assembly in the southern most port of Salalah in May.

USED BOAT SHOW AT SWANWICK CELEBRATES 30TH YEAR

Premier is pleased to announce that they will be holding the Premier Used Boat Show from 11th – 20th September at Swanwick Marina.  The show, now in it’s 30th year has been hailed in the press as the “Best Used Boat Show on the South Coast” and Premier are proud to continue with this event.  Entry and parking at the show is FREE and the show is open from 10am–7pm daily.

This year Premier are working with onsite Swanwick tenants, Princess, Walton Marine and Dickies International to offer even more high quality used boats across the board.  There will be boats from Elan, Moody, Island Packet, Jeanneau, Beneteau, and Princess as well as many other well known brands.  Raymarine are also supporting the show and will have a presence inside the show marquee.

BRITAINS GOT TALENT 'ESCALA' PERFORM AT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW

Glamorous quartet Escala from Britain's Got Talent will perform at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, at the official launch of the new Sunseeker Predator 130 yacht.

Escale will play 'a number of high-octane contemporary classical tracks from their self-titled debut album' on Friday 11 September at 11.30am.

They will join Sunseeker CEO Robert Braithwaite CBE and powerboat enthusiasts Geoff Tobert and Ray Bullman, MBY's powerboating correspondent, who will cut a ribbon to officially launch the high performance motoryacht Predator 130, already acclaimed as 'star-of-the-show'.

YACHTS AND YACHTING SAVED FROM ADMINISTRATION

After publishing for 62 years, Yachts & Yachting went into administration last week, but the title has been bought by GNM Media, which counts Y&Y editor Gael Pawson and online editor Mark Jardine as directors.
 
The magazine's parent company, Yachting Press Ltd will be closing its Southend offices and the magazine's sister publication, Boards, has a new home with Factory Media.

'By acting speedily we have secured a smooth transition for readers and advertisers alike,’ said Ms Pawson. ‘Subscribers are assured that their subscriptions will be fulfilled and they will continue to receive their copies as normal.
