BAIN GIVES UP BAVARIA YACHTS

Private equity firm Bain Capital is expected to hand over the helm of German sailboat builder Bavaria Yachtbau to two distressed-debt investors, according to reports appearing in the financial press this week. US-based investors Oaktree Capital Management and Anchorage Advisors are thought likely to take equal equity stakes in Bavaria Yachtbau after buying its debt for a total of about €300m, reported Private Equity News.

Bain Capital bought Bavaria in 2007 at the height of the private equity boom for a reported €1.3bn, and is said to have put €400m of equity from its own funds into the deal.

MIKE PERHAM BECOMES AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE PRINCES TRUST

Mike Perham, the youngest person to sail solo around the world, has become an Ambassador for the Prince's Trust, the British youth charity headed by HRH Prince Charles that helps change young lives.

The 17 year old adventurer from Potters Bar, who took 9 months to circumnavigate the Globe and returned to Portsmouth at the end of August, made his first official engagement at a Sport United reception held at the Lord's Cricket Ground last night (Monday 28th September).

Mike is now back attending St Albans College to complete his Sports Performance and Excellence Diploma before joining Australian adventurer Don McIntryre and two other crew on the Bounty Boat Expedition. 

They will re-live Capt. Bligh's remarkable 4,000 mile voyage in an open boat from Tonga to Timor 221 years after the famous mutiny on HMS Bounty.

TELEMAR SIGNS TWO NEW CODECASA 65 METRE PROJECTS

VIAREGGIO - TELEMAR YACHTING, www.telemar-yachting.com  the Viareggio-based Integrated Marine Electronics Specialists providing Navigation, Communication, Audio/Video Entertainment systems, Computer Integration, Security Systems and Airtime to the world's superyacht industry has signed two projects for Italian builder Codecasa.

The two 65-metre yachts, projects C118 and F71, will have the most comprehensive electronics, navigation and audio visual packages to date.   TELEMAR YACHTING will install all of the electronics including VSAT and as a result the Audio Visual System could be integrated with the yacht's computer network and navigation system.

PHOTO COMPETITION 'CAPTURES' MDL MARINAS THROUGH CUSTOMERS' EYES

This summer, MDL Marinas ran its first customer photo competition which invited berth holders and visitors to capture the best of their boating experiences at MDL's 19 UK marinas and within the local cruising grounds.

Customers competed for the chance to win a top prize and have their photo featured on MDL's all-new stand at this year's PSP Southampton Boat Show. Jon Eads, Managing Director of MDL's Marina Division and well-known marine photographer Mike Jones LBIPP presented the overall winner, Mr Peter Hayton from Dorset, with a new waterproof camera, accessories and bottle of bubbly.

ALEX THOMSON AND ROSS DANIEL TO COMPETE IN THE TRANSAT JACQUES VABRE

Alex has announced his co skipper for the TJV on the 8 November will be his long time boat captain Ross Daniel. Alex and Ross will take part in this transatlantic race on the current IMOCA 60 HUGO BOSS, which is now up for sale following the purchase of PINDAR last week.

This is the last race that Alex will take part in on his 2007 Finot Conq Open 60, and the first IMOCA offshore race that he and Ross will compete in together. Having sailed and worked together for 8 years, and seen through 2 vendee campaigns, Ross and Alex are in a very good position to push the boat to its maximum potential.

Ross, like Alex, started his career at Clipper, then went onto skipper on their round the world race before venturing into the IMOCA class. Ross also won early accolades in his career being the youngest skipper to win the ARC in 2001 at the age of 21, and at the same time breaking the record for the crossing in 11 days.

COMPETITION WINNERS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR RYA

Throughout the PSP Southampton Boat Show the RYA ran a number of competitions asking new and existing members exactly why they were members, as well as the extremely popular RYA record breaker bowline tie competition.

Norman Munnery from Blandford Forum, was deemed winner in the new member competition stating that he joined the RYA because “it’s important for boaters to support an organisation that supports them”, whilst James Bremridge from Ivybridge in Devon, who has been a member of the RYA on and off for most of his life won the existing member competition.  When asked why he was a member James said: “You represent my interests, you train me and you keep me informed”, neatly summing up the work of the RYA.

NEW PRODUCTS AND NATIONAL TV COVERAGE MAKE FOR A GREAT SHOW FOR JOHNSON OUTDOORS UK

A wide range of affordable water craft and marine electronics made for a busy stand for Johnson Outdoors UK at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. “People came specifically looking for us and they were there to buy,” commented Andrew Dron of Johnson Outdoors UK. “Our range of sit-on-top kayaks always do particularly well at Southampton. We also had a great deal of interest in the new products such as the Nalu paddleboard and the Torque Angler powered kayak.”

The popularity of kayak fishing has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Visitors to the stand had the chance to meet members of the Ocean Kayak Fishing Team and experts from AnglersAfloat who were able to advise those new to the sport how to get afloat and swap tips with experienced anglers. The family canoes and recreational and touring kayaks were also a major attraction.
