IRANIAN NAVY DETAINS FIVE BRITONS ON YACHT IN GULF

Five Britons have been detained by the Iranian navy while sailing a yacht from Bahrain to Dubai, the Foreign Office (FCO) has said.

The sailors were crewing a boat belonging to Sail Bahrain when they were stopped on 25 November.

In a statement, the FCO said it was possible the crew, who are still in Iran, may have "strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters".

RYA CHALLENGES STOP AND SEARCH POWERS OF UKBA CUSTOMS CUTTERS

The UK Border Agency (“UKBA”) has recently announced that it now has a fleet of five cutters patrolling the United Kingdom’s coastline. These fast patrol vessels form part of the recent transfer of some customs responsibilities from HM Revenue & Customs to the UKBA. Previously known as Her Majesty’s Customs Cutters, the vessels will now be called Her Majesty’s Cutters.

However, in response to a number of letters from RYA members who have been victims of ‘stop and search’ raids at sea, the RYA has approached the Minister of State for Borders and Immigration to seek clarification of the statutory powers of the UKBA cutter crews and boarding parties.

OFCOM STATEMENT - RNLI WONT HAVE TO PAY RADIO FEES

Following last year’s consultation, in August 2009 Ofcom published further proposals for spectrum pricing in the maritime sector.

Those relevant to the RNLI and other safety-of-life charities were:

•Radio channels used by search and rescue organisations (including the RNLI) in the course of maritime emergencies are managed by HM Coastguard.

These are shared channels and we will not be asking any individual rescue organisations to pay fees.

RYA SAILABILITY AND COUTTS BANK JOIN FORCES TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FUTURE TALENT

RYA Sailability, the charity which helps disabled people to sail, hit London on Thursday with a fundraiser hosted by Coutts Bank and with HRH Princess Anne and the 2008 Paralympians as guests of honour.

The evening raised over £35,000 which will be split between grants for the purchase of specially adapted boats and the disability racing development programme.

Special guests were Skandia team GBR's SKUD world champions Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell who recently returned from the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships in Athens with Gold.

TRANSGLOBE UPDATE - LEG 5 GETS UNDERWAY - PERTH TO SYDNEY

Forty-two British forces service personnel have set off from Perth in WA on three 67ft steel-hulled yachts leaving Fremantle Sailing Club at 1200 local (0400 UT) to tackle a 2,200 nautical mile voyage through the Australian Bight and the notorious Bass Strait en route to Sydney on the east coast of Australia.

This is the 5th and a relatively short stage of a year-long, 13-leg adventurous sail training exercise that rehabilitates, restores and revitalises its crew members, many of whom are  complete sailing novices, and many of whom have only very recently returned from serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
