FIRST OFFICIAL CONSIGNMENT OF BOATS ARRIVES AT NEW SANT CARLES MARINA

NAVY SHOOTS SOMALI PIRATES

The Royal Navy has repelled a pirate attack on a Danish cargo-ship off the coast of Yemen, shooting dead two men believed to be Somali pirates.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the incident took place on Tuesday, when HMS Cumberland crew members tried to board a traditional wooden dhow.

PIRATES CAPTURE SAUDI OIL TANKER

Pirates have seized a giant Saudi-owned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean off the Kenyan coast and are steering it towards Somalia, the US Navy reports.

The US-bound tanker was captured on Saturday some 450 nautical miles (830km) south-east of Mombasa, and is now approaching the Somali port of Eyl.

MUMBAI TERRORISTS ARRIVED BY BOAT

Terrorists who attacked the financial district, railway station and two upscale hotels yesterday in Mumbai arrived by small high-speed boats, according to local press reports.

After taking independent planning advice, this week we have sent the department new evidence.

The Chairman of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s lifeboat station at Salcombe has retired after 35 years service with the charity.
 

Dr Eric McLarty, a well known former Salcombe GP, began his association with the RNLI as an Honorary Medical Adviser in 1973 requiring him to respond, along with the volunteer lifeboat crew members, to rescues involving the sick or injured at sea although some would say that having delivered some members of the lifeboat crew at birth his association began much earlier!

STAY SAFE AT SEA AND GIVE RNLI VOLUNTEERS A CHRISTMAS BREAK

RNLI lifeboat crews in the north of England are offering seasonal sea safety advice in the hope of avoiding a repeat of last Christmas, which was one of the busiest they have ever experienced.

Last year, lifeboats in the rescue charity’s North Division launched 20 times between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day – almost double the number of launches during either of the two previous Christmases*.

Nationally, since 1980, RNLI lifeboat launches over the festive period have increased by 395% from 20 call outs in 1980 to 99 in 2007.

Mistley Parish Council has summoned Michael Dew, the Tendring District councillor for Mistley and Manningtree, to its end-of-year meeting on Monday 22 December to account for his recent actions.

On 9 December  Dew voted against a motion put forward by Conservative district councillors Sarah Candy and Carlo Guglielmi that: 'This Council finds the recently erected fence at Mistley Quay to be 
detrimental to the visual amenity, harmful to the character of the area and contrary to the Council's aspirations to protect and safeguard the Manningtree and Mistley Conservation area."

QE2 BEGINS FINAL VOYAGE

The world-famous QE2 liner has left Southampton on its last ever voyage, as thousands of well-wishers looked on from the quayside.

The ship began to slip its berth at 1915 GMT, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

The 41-year-old liner is being taken out of service and turned into a floating hotel in Dubai.

BIG 5 KAYAK CHALLENGE - LATEST NEWS

The Big5Kayak challenge team have been training hard on the River Thames, the Great Ouse and also two of the team trained over Christmas on the West coast of Ireland.  Weekends have consisted of longer paddling stints of 3-5 hours depending on location and conditions. 

During the week the team have paddled in pairs either on the Thames or on the Great Ouse at Viking Kayak Club with shorter stints of 40 mins to an hour. The darker colder mornings have added to the challenge of getting up for a paddle at first light.  Some motivation strangely has been drawn from beating the local rowing club star onto the water.

RORC CARIBBEAN 600 RACE TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES

The Caribbean is due to serve up some sublime sailing conditions for the inaugural RORC Caribbean 600 and the competitors are expecting to blast around the course in big breeze, warm seas and ocean swell.

At the Skipper’s briefing held at the Antigua Yacht Club, RORC Racing Manager, Ian Loffhagen, fine-tuned the racing instructions to a highly experienced audience of sailors from the Olympics, America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race. Afterwards, a reception was held on the lawn to sample some of the local fayre. The Hon. Harold Lovell, Minister for Tourism for Antigua and Barbuda, gave a warm welcome to all of the guests and Antigua Yacht Club Commodore, Elizabeth Jordan, announced that all of the facilities at the yacht club would be open 24 hours a day during the race. Not surprisingly this got a loud roar of approval!

US AND CHINESE NAVIES FACE OFF IN SOUTH CHINA SEAS

China and America have been drawn into a rare confrontation on the high seas, it emerged today, when the Pentagon accused Chinese ships of manoeuvring dangerously close to a US navy vessel.

The US intends to protest to the Chinese military attache in Washington after Sunday's incident, which followed several days of what US defence officials called "increasingly aggressive" acts by Chinese ships.

At one point, the Pentagon said, the US vessel Impeccable sprayed one ship with water from fire hoses to force it away.

SUNDERLAND LIFEBOAT LAUNCHED AFTER BODY SIGHTING

Sunderland’s RNLI Atlantic 85 Lifeboat was scrambled into action shortly after eight o’clock this morning [Thursday, February 05th] after a fisherman on the end of Roker Pier reported the sighting of a body drifting out to sea.

Coastguard Officers based at Humber Coastguard Marine Rescue Coordination Centre contacted the Sunderland RNLI Operations Manager to request the immediate launch of their Atlantic 85 lifeboat, ‘Wolseley’.

A separate request was also made to Sunderland MCA Coastguard Team to attend the incident.

PANAMA YACHT CLUB UNLAWFULLY DESTROYED

Built little more than a decade after the completion of the canal, the Club was obliterated a minute after midnight on February 27

The 81-years-old Panama Canal Yacht Club, near the French cut in Colon was demolished in the middle of the night by employees of Panama Ports Company. Boat owners, employees and businessmen, were evicted and give only only an hour to vacate the premises.

FISHERMAN WHO FAKED DEATH JAILED

A commercial fisherman who faked his own death to thwart a Marine and Fisheries Agency (MFA) inquiry has been jailed for two and a half years.

Derek Atkins, 56, from Portsmouth, sent a false obituary for his alias of Roger Atkins to the Fishing News newspaper, the city's crown court heard.

He had previously admitted perverting the course of justice, deception and fraud, as well as 21 fishery offences.

BRITISH COUPLE RESCUED AFTER 40 DAYS ADRIFT

A British couple who, between them, have sailed the Atlantic Ocean a total of 11 times, have been saved from the middle of that same ocean by an Italian tanker after spending 40 days disabled and drifting.

Stuart Armstrong, 51, and his partner Andrea Davison, 48, are on board supertanker Indian Point and heading back to Amsterdam.

Although they escaped unhurt, they were tired, exhausted and grateful to be heading home after their six-week ordeal.

EXERCISE TRANSGLOBE STEPS UP A GEAR

Three 67ft steel hulled yachts named Adventure, Challenger and Discoverer and crewed by Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force personnel, will set off from a start gate off Southsea Castle at 1300 hours on the 11th July 2009, to undertake an adventurous sail training exercise that will circumnavigate the globe under the banner Exercise TRANSGLOBE.  There are 13 legs being sailed with crew changes on most legs, allowing over 500 service personnel to experience the thrills, spills and chills of ocean sailing.

Organised by the Joint Service Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) in Gosport, Exercise TRANSGLOBE has the Royal Patronage of HRH The Duke of York, and the full support of the Service Chiefs.

NEW RIG FOR TALL SHIP LOTH LORIEN

The Dutch tall ship Loth Loriën will be sporting a new sail rig when she arrives in Portsmouth in May 2009.  This beautiful ship has undergone a transformation over the winter to convert what was a three-mast schooner into a three-mast barquentine.

The ship’s owner, Jaap van der Rest, has spent the last few months working hard to replace the foremast and adding four new yard arms and square sails in time for the summer season. 

The change in rig will give the ship a totally different appearance and will also change her dynamics under sail. “The changes have made a lot of work for the team” says Van der Rest “but the transformation is astonishing – she looks fantastic!”

ASYLUM SEEKERS KILLED IN HORRIFIC BLAZE

Petrol is believed to have been introduced into the bilges of an asylum-seeker boat minutes before it exploded last Thursday, killing five of those on board off the coast of Northern Australia.

As the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promised closer co-operation to stamp out people-smuggling yesterday, senior government sources told that a strong build-up of petrol vapours was emerging as the likely cause of the fatal blast.

The Prime Minister spoke by telephone with Mr Yudhoyono yesterday afternoon and the pair agreed "push factors", including the conflicts in Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, were the main reason for the surge in asylum-seeker arrivals in recent weeks.

Following a major revamp of the entries system, ALL entries will need to be completed online. This will speed up the entry process and give entrants the option to modify their entry at a later date

PREMIER ROADSHOW TO VISIT BRIGHTON IN 2009

THE BOAT RACE - DARK BLUES MAKE IT FOUR WINS OUT OF FIVE

Oxford won the 155th Boat Race by 3 ½ lengths with a power surge in the second half of the Race reminiscent of last year.

Cambridge won the toss and chose Surrey, something perhaps indicating that they would go hard off the start. They did this and were just in the lead after one minute and had stretched this to a third of a length after another minute.

Oxford though drew back by the Mile and led by half a second in a time which was only three seconds outside the record.

FOUR RESCUED FROM BURNING MOTORBOAT

Four motorboaters made a hasty retreat from their burning thirty-six foot boat this afternoon.

Solent Coastguard were contacted by a nearby vessel at 1.00 pm to report that the motorboat, Rochford was on fire in Chichester Harbour.

The Coastguard then received a mayday broadcast from another vessel Eskimo reporting that they were alongside the motorboat and taking off its four crew.

WATCHING OUT FOR BOAT THEFT IN WATCHET

MARITIME security has been tightened at the seaside town of Watchet in Somerset following the launch of a new Boat Watch scheme using SelectaDNA forensic marking.

The Boat Watch initiative, which has helped to reduce theft and criminal damage in many boating communities around the UK, was set up in Watchet in response to a spate of thefts from the marina. One recent incident involved the local Sea Scouts’ base, which was broken into and £1,200 of gear, including two kayaks, was stolen.

The historic Watchet harbour dates back to Saxon times but has been refurbished with a state-of-the-art marina containing 250 berths for both pleasure craft and charter fishing boats.

PORTLAND - CLEARING THE WAY FOR HUNDREDS OF NEW JOBS

The Zapcat season started off in style this weekend as 28 teams and thousands of people descended on Bournemouth’s beaches for The Tohatsu Bournemouth Grand Prix and to enjoy the summer’s perfect weather.

The new points system, which was announced at the start of the season, provided some interesting movements between divisions after Saturdays racing with 4 teams gaining promotion to Division 1. Also entering into the top division for the days racing were the formidable 3 times champions Martin Wilcox and Will Evans in Zapcat 04 Wet Willy 2: Wilcox and Evans who are both employed by Tohatsu decided to make a late entry into the Tohatsu Grand Prix although they will not be competing in the full season.

MIKE PERHAM BECOMES AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE PRINCES TRUST

Mike Perham, the youngest person to sail solo around the world, has become an Ambassador for the Prince's Trust, the British youth charity headed by HRH Prince Charles that helps change young lives.

The 17 year old adventurer from Potters Bar, who took 9 months to circumnavigate the Globe and returned to Portsmouth at the end of August, made his first official engagement at a Sport United reception held at the Lord's Cricket Ground last night (Monday 28th September).

They will re-live Capt. Bligh's remarkable 4,000 mile voyage in an open boat from Tonga to Timor 221 years after the famous mutiny on HMS Bounty.

ELLEN MACARTHUR QUITS YACHT RACING TO SAVE PLANET

Record-breaking sailing star Dame Ellen MacArthur has announced she will never compete in a yacht race again. 
 
The 33-year-old, who broke the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005, said she was instead planning to pour her energies into helping to save the planet.

Appearing on BBC Radio 4, Dame Ellen said a trip to the Atlantic island of South Georgia had made her acutely aware of the challenges facing the environment.

At sea, every resource is precious and must be used carefully, she said - even something as commonplace as kitchen roll is eked out piece by piece - and this had given her a different view on the way mankind uses the earth's resources.

FIREFIGHTER FOUND DEAD AFTER SURFING AT KIMMERIDGE BAY

A surfer found dead off a Dorset bay has been identified as a firefighter and father-of-one from Southampton.

The body of Richard Carrington, 38, was spotted floating off Kimmeridge Bay by a passer-by on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Carrington, who leaves a wife and daughter, had served as a fireman for 19 years and was stationed at Hightown.

THIRTY FOOT YACHT HITS BRIXHAM BREAKWATER

A thirty foot long yacht this evening sailed straight on to Brixham Breakwater to the amazement of several people who were out for a stroll in the fine weather.

Two members of the public, realising that there was obviously something wrong, slithered down the steep seaward side of the Victorian Breakwater and boarded the yacht. An other bystander telephoned the Coastguard to summon help from the RNLI Torbay Lifeboat, which was stationed less than half a mile away.

To their surprise, the two members of the public found the skipper of the yacht asleep in the cockpit! When they woke him, he was apparently a little the worse for wear, having consumed a little too much alcohol.

I was asleep and men with guns came aboard. It was on Friday last week at 0230,' said Paul Chandler, whose identity was confirmed by Rachel Chandler's brother Stephen Collett. 'They kept asking for money and took everything of value on the boat.'

The pirates then headed for the Somalian coast onboard the Chandlers' Rival 38 Lynn Rival, where they were spotted by an airborne patrol (see picture).

Somali pirates who have kidnapped a couple from Kent have issued a ransom demand of $7m (£4.3m) in a call to the BBC.

Paul and Rachel Chandler, aged 59 and 55, from Tunbridge Wells, were taken hostage by gunmen in the Indian Ocean in the early hours of 23 October.

They had been travelling to Tanzania from the Seychelles and their yacht was later found in international waters.

PORTRUSH LIFEBOATMAN GETS BRAVERY AWARD FOR DARING RESCUE

Anthony Chambers (50), mechanic and crew member at Portrush lifeboat station, Antrim, Northern Ireland, is to be awarded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) Bronze Medal for Gallantry for rescuing two 14-year-old boys trapped by the rising tide in a cliff cave near Castlerock Strand on 5 August 2009.

 

The Coastguard tasked land, sea and air rescue teams as soon as the alarm was raised by worried parents, and the RNLI charity’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats at Portrush launched to help with the search operation.

MDL ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF SAIL TRAINING AWARDS 2010

Europe's largest marina group, MDL Marinas has announced the winners of the 2010 MDL Sail Training Awards. Gus Lewis RYA Head of Legal and Government Affairs: “Although we supported the marine and Coastal Access Bill in principle we proposed a number of amendments on which we lobbied members of the House of the Lords to put forward to the House.

The majority of our amendments were taken account of  and as such we are very pleased with the resulting Act.  It goes further in protecting and taking account of recreational boaters interests, as far as is possible within the context of the Act, than the draft Bill had done.

RNLI AID IN FLOOD RESCUE EFFORTS

Volunteers from every part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, including 17 Swift Water Technicians from North Wales have been involved in a massive search and rescue operation. The team have been working through the night in ‘horrendous conditions’ after record-breaking rainfall swamped parts of northern England.

More than forty members of the RNLI Flood Rescue Team from across the county have joined other emergency services in the mammoth flood rescue operation. The North Wales volunteers are from Conwy, Llandudno, Criccieth, Moelfre, Rhyl, Flint, Beaumaris, and Pwllheli RNLI lifeboats stations. They are all trained in swift water rescue.

RYA SAILABILITY AND COUTTS BANK JOIN FORCES TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FUTURE TALENT

RYA Sailability, the charity which helps disabled people to sail, hit London on Thursday with a fundraiser hosted by Coutts Bank and with HRH Princess Anne and the 2008 Paralympians as guests of honour.

The evening raised over £35,000 which will be split between grants for the purchase of specially adapted boats and the disability racing development programme.

Special guests were Skandia team GBR's SKUD world champions Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell who recently returned from the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships in Athens with Gold.

OFCOM STATEMENT - RNLI WONT HAVE TO PAY RADIO FEES

Following last year’s consultation, in August 2009 Ofcom published further proposals for spectrum pricing in the maritime sector.

Those relevant to the RNLI and other safety-of-life charities were:

•Radio channels used by search and rescue organisations (including the RNLI) in the course of maritime emergencies are managed by HM Coastguard.

These are shared channels and we will not be asking any individual rescue organisations to pay fees.

IRANIAN NAVY DETAINS FIVE BRITONS ON YACHT IN GULF

Five Britons have been detained by the Iranian navy while sailing a yacht from Bahrain to Dubai, the Foreign Office (FCO) has said.

The sailors were crewing a boat belonging to Sail Bahrain when they were stopped on 25 November.

In a statement, the FCO said it was possible the crew, who are still in Iran, may have "strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters".

IRAN ISSUES WARNING OVER UK YACHT CREW

The five Britons are being detained by the Iranian navy after the Volvo 60 yacht was stopped on 25 November.

The Foreign Office said Luke Porter, Oliver Smith, David Bloomer, Oliver Young and Sam Usher may have "strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters".

The Team Pindar-backed yacht was sailing from Bahrain to Dubai.

Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaie, President Ahmadinejad's head of staff, told Iran's Fars news agency: "Judiciary will decide about the five... naturally our measures will be hard and serious if we find out they had evil intentions."

RELEASED CREW ADMIT MISTAKE STRAYING INTO IRANIAN WATERS

The skipper of a British-crewed yacht detained by Iran has said they strayed into Iranian waters by "mistake".

Oliver Smith added the crew were blindfolded while at sea, apart from him as he was at the helm.

The crew were sailing from Bahrain to Dubai to take part in a race when they drifted into Iran's territorial waters.

The group are now in Dubai - their original destination - and have held a brief news conference to give more details about the incident.

RYA - UK BORDER CONTROL BLOW

The Home Affairs Select Committee has today published the report of its investigation into the Government’s £1.2 billion e-Borders programme.

The report concluded that “the e-Borders programme is therefore, as far as we can ascertain, likely to be illegal under the EU Treaty” and we understand that the European Commission has written to the Government in similar terms.

Reports from the national media suggest that the Home Office has now agreed that travellers will not be obliged to give personal information when they travel, in order to ensure that the whole scheme does not fall foul of EU rules on the free movement of people within the EU.

MISTLEY QUAY FENCE HINDERS SEA RESCUE

A dramatic sea rescue on Saturday was delayed as coastguards had to recruit locals to help remove a section of the fence on Mistley Quay.

Coastguards were called to the quay at around 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon and used bolt cutters to cut away a section of the fence on Mistley Quay. But they were unable to lift it out of its fixings without the aid of two local residents.

The lifeboat was then able to safely land four adults on the quay, where an ambulance was waiting. The sailors had got into trouble when their borrowed dinghy capsized in deep water off the quay.

LITTLE BRITAIN CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTS £100K TO NOMINATED CHARITIES

Construction industry regatta the Little Britain Challenge Cup held its annual charity cheque presentations at a reception in London last week.

Despite the economic downturn, and reduced numbers at the 2009 event, nearly £100k was raised for the event charities.  David Smith, the new Chairman of the event Committee said, “We started 2009 not knowing what the year would bring, but we couldn’t have hoped for a better event or the generosity of the entrants who helped boost our funds through the various fundraising activities.

OFFICIAL HANDOVER OF NEW £4m RYA PORTLAND HOUSE

A £4 million multi purpose facility for the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) at Osprey Quay on Portland in Dorset has been formally handed over.

RYA Portland House has been developed by regeneration company the Sutton Harbour Group in partnership with the South West RDA (Regional Development Agency) and will be the hub of performance sailing in the run up to and during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It is the first phase of Sutton Harbour’s £30 million leisure and tourism development called Castle Court near Portland Castle, and the latest development to take shape at Osprey Quay where the RDA is investing £40 million to transform the former Royal Navy Air Station into a major employment centre with up to 1,400 jobs by 2016.

Europe's largest marina group, MDL Marinas has announced the winners of its annual 'MDL in Bloom' competition, which rewards 'green fingered' teams at its marinas. Many sites picked up awards for winning their categories, including Hamble Point Marina, Mercury Yacht Harbour, Ocean Village Marina and Shamrock Quay. The winning marinas were presented with gift vouchers and trophies to display on-site.

KAYAK FISHING DAY FOR DISABLED PEOPLE A HUGE SUCCESS

The freedom and fun of fishing from kayaks was introduced to an enthusiastic new audience at the Disability ‘Try It’ Day on June 27th at Llangorse Sailing Club, Powys.

The event was promoted by the website Anglers Afloat and supported by Johnson Outdoors UK who took along a whole assortment of sit-on-tops.

“It was a great day and we had a brilliant response taking up to 50 people out on to the water,” commented Mark Crame of Johnson Outdoors UK.  “They absolutely loved it and everybody came back smiling.”

FREE THE QUAY - POLICE CALLED TO INVESTIGATE DINNER

Never have quiet dinners with neighbours attracted so much police attention.

Saturday’s “moveable feast” fundraiser for Free the Quay had to be cancelled when the organisers discovered that they should have applied for drinks licenses in order to sell the £25 entry tickets, which had been advertised to include wine as well as food.

On arrival a refund was given to every ticket holder but the hungry hordes were still able to eat because of the generosity of the people of Mistley. They opened their doors and dinner tables to all 70 or so supporters and wined and dined them free of charge.

NEW WEBCAM FOR PORTLAND OLYMPICS

A new webcam will beam medal ceremonies and live racing to the world – and is enabling sailors to check the weather conditions before they set off for Portland.

The webcam – which has been sited at the Weymouth and Portland National sailing Academy – can be moved to take in Portland Harbour, or the Academy itself.

This means people will be able to view all the happenings at RS:X Windsurf World event from 3-11 September  and the Sail for Gold event from 14-19 September and at every major event including the 2012 Olympic sailing events. Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s officers have trained Academy staff to move the webcam, so that people logging on to www.weymouth.gov.uk can see the most interesting view.

PERMISSIONS SOUGHT FOR COWES OUTER HARBOUR PROJECT TO PROCEED

Cowes Harbour Commission has received an application for a Cowes Harbour Works and Dredge Consent from SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) for the Outer Harbour Project.
 
The Harbour Works consent is one of three permissions required for the Project, the others being:
 
Consent under the Food & Environment Protection Act, issued by the Marine and Fisheries Agency;
Planning Permission from the Isle of Wight Council.

The components of the plan are:
 
Construction of a new rock mound breakwater and a short extension to the Shrape breakwater to create a properly protected outer harbour for the benefit of both East Cowes and Cowes;

A marina of 300 permanent berths with separate dedicated provision of visitor and event berths to support the waterfront re-generation of East Cowes;

Dredging of a new eastern channel to improve vessel safety within the harbour, especially during major yachting events such as Cowes Week and the annual Round the Island Race.

RYA MOUNTS INVESTIGATION INTO DOVER REGATTA INCIDENT

The RYA is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the powerboat racing incident which took place on Saturday 8 August. 

Two of the Phantom 19s racing in the OCR class (Offshore Circuit Racing) collided on the 25th lap of the race.  Alex Edmonds, the co-pilot in one of the two boats, tragically died following the collision.

John Puddifoot RYA Powerboat Racing Manager said: “The RYA is keen to identify appropriate lessons that might be learned from any serious incident that takes place in powerboat racing. This was a tragic accident and the Inquiry Board we have established will examine closely the circumstances in which the accident happened and the event as a whole”.

SAILING LEGEND SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON WILL COMPETE IN THE GREATEST OFFSHORE POWERBOAT RACE IN THE WORLD

ALEX THOMSON GOES KEEL WALKING AT 20 KNOTS

GIBRALTERS RIBSTERS REV UP FOR CHAMPIONSIP FINAL

Gibraltar’s best young RIB drivers, Jordan Warwick, 10, and Dylan Mauro, 13, will be travelling to the PSP Southampton Boat Show in two weeks time (September 13) to compete against the UK’s top RIB driving talent in the final of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship. The youngsters proved their skills and won their places at the national final when they claimed victory in 8-12 and 13-16 age group classes of the Gibraltar overseas final held at the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club (RGYC) this weekend (31 August). 

Conditions were good for RIB driving, fine weather and calm seas, however, the atmosphere on the time trial race course was anything but calm with competitors from three different clubs, RGYC, 1st/4th Gibraltar Scouts and the Gibraltar Sea Scouts each keen to blow each other out of the water and secure a place at the final.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT IN DOVER CHALLENGE EVENT

The RYA confirm that a fatality occurred during the Dover Regatta Challenge on Saturday 8 August as the result of two powerboats colliding.  

13 boats were competing in the OCR class when the incident happened during the third race of the day.  Medical assistance was at the scene within minutes of the incident and the emergency services alerted.  

The RYA is working closely with the authorities on a full investigation into the incident. No further details can be given at this point.

OMAN SAIL'S NEW 100FT TRIMARAN MAKES FIRST SPLASH

A new flagship for Arabia, this new 105 foot trimaran, known as an Arabian 100 (A100), was built by Boat Speed in Australia before the components were shipped to Oman for assembly in the southern most port of Salalah in May.

VETERAN SAILOR READY FOR EPIC ATLANTIC CROSSING IN 3FT BOAT

It’s taken a long time to get ready for this epic voyage, but finally, Tom McNally (affectionately dubbed the ‘Crazy Sailor’) is almost ready to set off on his epic voyage in the world’s most diminutive trans-Atlantic sailing boat, the amazing 3-foot 10-inch ‘Big C’.

Tom, who is sailing for the Sail 4 Cancer charity, had hoped to embark last year; but his plans were scuppered when thieves stole his main battery-housing and the lead-filled keel bulb for their scrap value.

“Thanks to some help from my sponsors we are back on track and we can see light at the end of the tunnel again; I just hope it’s not another train,” joked Tom at the Southampton Boat Show.

2009 YJA PANTAENIUS YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR AND YOUNG SAILOR OF THE YEAR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The finalists of the 2009 YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year and YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year awards have been announced.

The vote for the overall winner now goes to the members of the Yachting Journalists’ Association (YJA) in a secret ballot. The winner of each award will be revealed at two separate ceremonies during the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show in January 2010.

YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year finalists includes Paul Goodison, World Laser champion, Olympic Gold medal and five times European champion.

Paul is the only sailor worldwide to hold all three awards at the same time and was nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award.

UK SAILORS 'FREED BY IRAN' - CLAIM INVESTIGATED BY FCO

The Foreign Office says it is "actively investigating" reports that five UK yachtsmen held by Iran's Revolutionary Guard for a week have been freed.

The crew were said to have mistakenly strayed into Iran waters as they sailed from Bahrain to Dubai for a race.

Iranian radio said they had been freed at 0730 local time (0400 GMT). It is thought they were held on Siri island.

The news comes hours after UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband spoke by phone to his Iranian counterpart.

THE GLAMOUR OF BIG CLASS CLASSIC YACHT RACING RETURNS TO COWES IN JULY

The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) and two partner Clubs, the New York Yacht Club  (NYYC) and Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM), are staging the Westward Cup regatta in Cowes from 5-11 July  2010 in collaboration with Boat International Media.

The organisers aim also to establish an event that would eventually lead to a revival of Big Class classic yacht racing as it was known from the  1910’s – 1930’s.

The Westward Cup has been initiated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the racing schooner Westward in 1910. She was designed and built by one of the most successful yacht designers, Nathanael G. Herreshoff, in Bristol, RI, USA.

in Mistley.

The jamboree kicks off at noon, and will end at 4pm. Entrance is £5 per adult and children come free. Visitors will be directed to free parking on the quay and in New Road. Mistley Green is across the High Street opposite the quay, down the side of The Thorn pub.

IRAN SENDS PIRATE HUNTERS TO GULF OF ADEN

An Iranian warship has entered the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian vessels against pirates off the coast of Somalia, state radio said on Saturday.

"After travelling more than 4,000 maritime miles ... an Iranian warship entered the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships against pirates," the radio said, without further details.

Iran said last month it was negotiating with pirates who seized a ship it had chartered but that it was ready to use force to free the vessel.

HISTORIC HAMBLE FERRY RESTAURANT BLAZE

A Grandad has been hailed a hero after his decision to work yesterday saved a historic restaurant from devastation.

It was chance that Trevor Bartlett went to work for a couple of hours and spotted The Ferry Restaurant go up in flames.

The 57-year-old marine worker, from Townhill Park, had gone to the Elephant Boatyard, Bursledon, to do some spraying while it was empty.

When it set sail for its latest tour of the Caribbean, the liner Ventura was brimming with festive cheer. This weekend, however, it is awash with claims that “chav” holidaymakers had turned it into the cruise ship from hell.
 
P&O is bracing itself for a flood of complaints from returning passengers about a “them and us” divide which saw guests who had paid up to £7,500 a cabin taking refuge from fighting families and underage drinkers. Some claim that youths were caught trying to set fire to a Christmas tree.

GRIFF RHYS JONES ABANDONS SHIP IN SHARK INFESTED WATERS

Griff Rhys Jones and his wife, Jo, were separated in the darkness after jumping from different ends of the 125ft boat, which was anchored off the Galapagos Islands.
 
The couple and 13 British friends were woken by crew as flames and smoke billowed from the engine room.

They jumped into the sea, where they knew there were Hammerhead and reef sharks, because crew feared the boat would explode.

Mr Rhys Jones, 55, a keen sailor, said: “All of a sudden we saw huge yellow flames shooting up from the boat.

One of the crew jumped into the sea and started swimming away from the boat and we were all encouraged to follow as the lifeboats had caught fire.

FREE THE QUAY - TRENT WHARFAGE IN NEW FENCE ROW

The company that put up a controversial fence on Mistley Quay in September is now preventing the erection of another fence on the quay.

Last week Gladedale Homes began putting up a metal fence along the perimeter of its Maltings waterside development. But workers from Trent Wharfage parked one of the company's lorries in its path, and blockaded the rest of the planned route with bags of granite. Gladedale workers have now abandoned work at the site.

TWO NUCLEAR SUBMARINES COLLIDE IN ATLANTIC

Two nuclear-armed submarines from Britain and France collided while on separate patrols in the Atlantic Ocean but there were no injuries or radioactive leaks, naval officials said on Monday.

Analysts said a major disaster could have resulted had the underwater collision ruptured the hulls, set off conventional ammunition or started a fire, although the chances of a full nuclear explosion were virtually nil.

The nuclear-powered submarines collided earlier this month but there was no damage to the vessels' weapons, said First Sea Lord Admiral Jonathon Band, head of the Royal Navy.

CHAMPAGNE OPENER FOR RORC CARIBBEAN 600 RACE

On the 23rd February, the inaugural RORC Caribbean 600 will start from English Harbour in Antigua, West Indies.

Offering perhaps some of the best sailing in the world, the 605 nautical mile yacht race zigzags north as far as St Marten and as far south as Guadeloupe. It will be a tough test for the yachts, the navigators and the crews.

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with the Antigua Yacht Club, the race has attracted a fleet of close to 30 boats, including some of the world’s most prestigious yachts.
