STANDARD HORIZON LAUNCHES THEIR MOST COMPACT FIXED VHF DSC RADIO YET 03 May 2009 (606 reads)
Standard Horizon has just launched one of the smallest fixed VHF DSC radios on the market. The ultra-compact GX1100E measures just 115mm x 60mm x 170mm (4.4in x 2.3in x 6.6in) but despite the small size, there has been no compromise on features. The front panel is fully waterproof (IPX7, one meter for 30 minutes) making it ideal for use on all types of craft, especially when space is at a premium.
The GX1100E is the first fixed DSC from Standard Horizon on which ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) can be fully programmed and switched on and off via the front panel. ATIS is an identification system used on inland waterways in many areas of mainland Europe.
Transmit power is switchable (via the front panel) between Low (1W) and High (25W), and there is a time-out facility which limits transmission time to 5 minutes, thus preventing unintentional (prolonged) transmissions.

NEW SCORPION 6.5M ENCOURAGES MORE AFFORDABLE RIBBING 20 April 2009 (811 reads)
To date Scorpion has always built its RIBs to order. As part of its growth plans however, the company is introducing a limited range of standard boats. The first of these is an updated version of the 6.5 metre, a model that was last produced from the Lymington-based yard in 2001.
According to Patrick Byrne of Scorpion RIBs: “The 6.5m was a very popular boat. We have had many requests for its re–introduction and the originals are in high demand. We are expanding our sales base and introducing a range of products that customers can buy ‘off the shelf’. The 6.5m is a good place to start. This boat is competitively priced and in the past the residual values have held up very well, so it is an ideal Scorpion starter boat …until of course you get drawn into the attractions of long distant ribbing.”

MASTERVOLT GEARS UP FOR THE HYBRID REVOLUTION 25 May 2009 (690 reads)
The Dutch-based marine electrical specialist, Mastervolt, is responding to a huge surge of interest in diesel electric hybrid systems for boats, both in the leisure and commercial sectors. The Mastervolt product range, from whisper-quiet generators to high-capacity batteries, is already ideally suited to hybrid applications, but in the coming year the Company will be making it better still.
‘Pioneers in the boating industry who work on hybrid electric boats can find it difficult to create reliable green systems,’ commented John de Rijk, Technical Director, Mastervolt International BV. ‘They often have problems sourcing compatible products, or lack the necessary specialist knowledge. The electric propulsion side is complex, but achievable, as the engineers are already familiar with bow thrusters and electric winches. The true challenge starts when looking at the battery power required, and the many ways in which that power can be regenerated. This is where Mastervolt comes in.’

THE OS2 SMOCK FROM GILL 20 September 2009 (651 reads)
Designed for serious coastal and offshore sailing, Gill has launched the OS2 Smock to compliment the market leading OS2 range of highly breathable and fully waterproof clothing.
The OS2 Smock introduces a 3 layer material to the OS2 range for the first time, an innovation matched perfectly to the design and ergonomics of a smock. Basically, using a 3 layer fabric makes the Smock much easier to get on and off, more comfortable to wear, and improves breathability.
Advantages of choosing a smock over a regular jacket are that the opportunity for water ingress through the neck opening and at the waist are significantly reduced for those who are particularly exposed to the elements – for example working on the bow in poor conditions. This is achieved through a comfortable and adjustable PU neck seal and a neoprene waistband that seals up easily.
