Kiwi yachting legend Dean Barker & business partner Richard Macalister acquire the majority shareholding

With the world economy suffering a period of such upheaval and uncertainty, it is a major boost for the Swedish-based marine electronics company Nexus Marine AB, to announce that a couple of top flight names operating at the sharp end of international yacht racing, Richard Macalister and his business partner, the America’s Cup skipper Dean Barker, have acquired the majority shareholding in this Stockholm-based company.

The Barrus Marine Service Training Programme 2009 got underway in January with over 260 marine technicians from 198 dealerships attending the Model Update Courses.

The Model Update Course is just one of a number of basic, intermediate and advanced courses offered by Barrus to apprentices, experienced technicians and dealers requiring refresher courses.

Mariner and Mercury outboard courses are combined with MerCruiser inboards to take advantage of the similarity in the product components and test equipment used. 

Mastervolt has added four new models to their ChargeMaster range of new generation fully automated battery chargers.

Digital Yacht, the Bristol based manufacturer of marine PC products have launched two new marine LCD monitors. 

The T112 is a 12" diagonal monitor (screen size measures 24.5 x 19cm) and is designed to be flush mounted into a panel.  It has inputs for VGA and DVI computer style connections as well as a general purpose video input, which is useful for connecting to a DVD player or onboard CCTV camera. 

The monitors are powered directly from 10V to 16V DC and whilst not suitable for permanent exterior mounting, they are waterproof to IP65 when flush mounted and feature a higher than normal 400cd brightness type display. 

Digital Yacht have launched a new range of marine instrumentation capable of displaying almost any onboard navigation or engine information. 

The series is called Intellect and there are two types of instrument available. 

The ID100 is dedicated to monitoring traditional depth, speed, heading, GPS and wind information plus also engine data available through a NMEA 2000 (N2K) data network and the ED100 is designed to monitor J1939 engine data such as fuel flow, pressure, temperature, alternator current/voltage, RPM and so on – a format normally utilised by diesel inboard manufacturers.

Most harbours and ports have either free or subscription based services available and with the extended range that the WL400 offers, it is often possible to tap into hot spots available in local cafes, bars and restaurants. 

The system comprises a rugged 1 metre antenna which connects to a PC via a standard plug and play USB interface.  All the electronics and modem are encapsulated within the antenna for easy installation and there is no need for an external power supply.  The system picks up power from the laptop or onboard PC.

Dometic Marine, the world leader in marine air conditioning, has recently delivered its highest specification of air conditioning system to the Turkish market, to Superyacht Builder RMK Marine. The 600,000 BTU system has been custom designed and built by Dometic Marine Engineers in accordance with the specific owner’s representative requirements for an RMK Marine 45 metre yacht.

The custom built air conditioning system incorporates a 600,000 BTU chiller plant, WhisperCool air handlers, Variable Frequency Drives, Fully Networked Cabin Controllers and a Marine Air chilled water master controller. Having successfully delivered the system, Dometic Marine’s engineers will assist RMK Marine during the layout and installation. They will also commission the project at the end of the installation process, expected Spring 2010, to verify the system and ensure that all equipment meets the exacting Dometic installation standard.

Designed for serious coastal and offshore sailing, Gill has launched the OS2 Smock to compliment the market leading OS2 range of highly breathable and fully waterproof clothing.

The OS2 Smock introduces a 3 layer material to the OS2 range for the first time, an innovation matched perfectly to the design and ergonomics of a smock.  Basically, using a 3 layer fabric makes the Smock much easier to get on and off, more comfortable to wear, and improves breathability.

Marine Electronic Services Ltd have launched a new AIS anti-collision system called the Watchmate WMR750. 

Watchmate is an electronic chart plotter incorporating a dual channel AIS receiver that displays an overlay of AIS targets but without mapping to clutter up the screen. 

The display emulates a radar with the vessel in the centre of the screen and the user able to choose from either a head up display when under way or a north up display when at anchor.  Other modes include a list of targets which can be prioritised and filtered identifying the most dangerous as a priority.

The Stockport family of a fisherman who is believed to have drowned after being dragged overboard while fishing for whelks, are backing a device to help ensure other fishermens’ lives are spared.

Dawn Hutchison and her brother Haydn Jones lost their father, Maldwyn Jones in April last year when he failed to return to shore after fishing in Nefyn, Wales.

Maldwyn’s nephew Rodney Jones raised the alarm after realising his uncle’s boat had not returned and a major search was then mounted, including Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) volunteers from Porthdinllaen lifeboat station who later found Maldwyn’s body.

The Discovery 50 Cat enjoyed an enthusiastic reception at the first boat show exclusively for Multihulls, The Atlantic Multihull Boat Show, which was held in Lorient, Southern Brittany.

As one of the few boats on display not built in France, the Discovery 50 Cat was welcomed by the organisers as giving the show a more international flavour in its first year.

The French passion for multihulls ensured the show attracted a high level of genuine enthusiasts and prospective purchasers.

Southampton based Discovery Yachts has added the option of a new look to its popular, award winning, Discovery 55. Taking some of the design elements of the much praised Discovery 67 which was launched last year, the company has incorporated an option which can provide the modern treatment of the 67 look to the Discovery 55. The classic 55 design will remain as the standard build.

Mastervolt, the Dutch-based manufacturer of innovative new electrical products, has proudly launched a range of three new 6-volt AGM batteries.

Each high-capacity model is designed to form a building block for a fully customised battery bank, allowing for 12, 24 or 48-volt banks to be created in restricted space onboard.

The new batteries are entirely maintenance free, and can be mounted either vertically, or horizontally. They are also completely safe, as any gasses released during charging are reabsorbed inside.

The cases are sealed, and are ventilated by the surrounding air, so there is no need for complex vented battery boxes. Should the battery be significantly overcharged in a faulty system, then a special safety valve will vent away the pressure.

The recent furore over car safety recalls has highlighted a serious shortcoming in the marine sector. Industry expert Sartech warns that consumer apathy and data protection rules could scupper effective emergency responses for EPIRB owners.

“Five years ago we were selling over 200 EPIRBs into the leisure sector every month,” explains Peter Forey, Managing Director of Surrey-based Sartech. “By rights, these units [or the majority of them allowing for lost, damaged and scrapped units] are now due for a service.

French sailing legend Michel Desjoyeaux onboard the IMOCA Open 60 'Foncia', stormed ahead to convincingly take first place in the 2008-09 edition of the Vendée Globe.  Fully rigged using optimized Navtec Z-system PBO rigging, 'Foncia' endured the most grueling offshore racing conditions to win one of the worlds toughest sailing events.
 
Navtec Performance Rigging, a division of Lewmar Marine, featured on over half of this year's Vendee Globe fleet.  2nd placed Armel LeCleac'h on 'BritAir' used Navtec's Z-system PBO and 4th place Sam Davis on 'Roxy' relied on Navtec Bi-Conic PBO for their standing rigging.
