DEE CAFFARI OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2010 RYA CLUB OF THE YEAR

Record breaking yachtswoman, Dee Caffari, today (11 September) opened applications for the RYA’s 2010 Club of the Year Award at the 2009 PSP Southampton Boat Show.

Joined on the RYA stand (E039) by RYA Volunteer Development Officer Jackie Bennetts, Dee posted the first entry to the 2010 competition.

“Clubs play a key role in getting more people into our sport whether that’s windsurfing, powerboating, motor cruising or my favourite yachting! When I started out sailing my club offered me a huge amount of support and that has played a massive part in getting me to where I am now. Without that I wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything I have”, commented Dee, a member of Royal Southampton Yacht Club.

WINNERS OF THE GREEN BLUE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

Record breaking solo sailor Dee Caffari and Mike Golding, one of the world’s best offshore racing sailors today (Friday 11 September) unveiled the winners of The Green Blue’s photography competition; ‘The Good, The Bad and The Funny’ at the PSP Southampton Boat Show.

In ‘The Good’ category it was David Cardy from Selsdon in Surrey who claimed the winner’s prize of a Henri Lloyd Shore jacket with his image of ‘Dolphins at play’ which was taken from the bow of a tourist boat (The Ionian Princess) in Lefkada, Greece.

In ‘The Bad’ category, Dominic Walton’s ‘Nest ‘o’ trash’ took the honours.  Dominic from Southsea in Hampshire took the picture of the nesting birds and chicks on the North Sea Canal in Amsterdam, whilst in ‘The Funny’ category it was Andrew Stewart, from Alresford, Hampshire’s basking ‘Sea lions in San Francisco’ who claimed the win.

NEW ZODIAC CABIN RIB MAKES SHOW DEBUT

DEJA VU AT THE 2009 HONDA RYA YOUTH RIB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

It was a case of deja vu at the 2009 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship Final when reigning champions Aaron Lowther, 16,  and Steven Curtis, 12, both blasted their way to Championship victory once again at the PSP Southampton Boat Show today (Sunday 13th September).

Having each won their respective titles in the 2008 final, there were high hopes for repeat success in 2009 when they each qualified to represent the Eastern region in the final once again.

Both boys beat off competition from 30 other kids from around the country to win their respective classes and clinch the coveted titles once more.

HRH PRINCESS ANNE LAUNCHES NEW RECYCLING INITATIVE TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND SAILING FOR THE DISABLED

Today at the PSP Southampton Boat Show (17 September), HRH Princess Anne officially launched the new Sailability and The Green Blue recycling initiative that will help raise funds for both of these great programmes.
 
With some 50 million mobile phones in circulation in the UK and over 310 million Inkjet cartridges and 10 million laser toner cartridges consumed in Western Europe this new scheme will allow people to donate their old phones and cartridges whilst at the same time raising money for both schemes.
 
After speaking with members of Sailability, The Green Blue and some of their supporters HRH Princess Anne said: “Bringing these two schemes together to raise funds is almost too good to be true, and they’re doing it thanks to rubbish!

NEW PRODUCTS AND NATIONAL TV COVERAGE MAKE FOR A GREAT SHOW FOR JOHNSON OUTDOORS UK

A wide range of affordable water craft and marine electronics made for a busy stand for Johnson Outdoors UK at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. “People came specifically looking for us and they were there to buy,” commented Andrew Dron of Johnson Outdoors UK. “Our range of sit-on-top kayaks always do particularly well at Southampton. We also had a great deal of interest in the new products such as the Nalu paddleboard and the Torque Angler powered kayak.”

The popularity of kayak fishing has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Visitors to the stand had the chance to meet members of the Ocean Kayak Fishing Team and experts from AnglersAfloat who were able to advise those new to the sport how to get afloat and swap tips with experienced anglers. The family canoes and recreational and touring kayaks were also a major attraction.

COMPETITION WINNERS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR RYA

Throughout the PSP Southampton Boat Show the RYA ran a number of competitions asking new and existing members exactly why they were members, as well as the extremely popular RYA record breaker bowline tie competition.

Norman Munnery from Blandford Forum, was deemed winner in the new member competition stating that he joined the RYA because “it’s important for boaters to support an organisation that supports them”, whilst James Bremridge from Ivybridge in Devon, who has been a member of the RYA on and off for most of his life won the existing member competition.  When asked why he was a member James said: “You represent my interests, you train me and you keep me informed”, neatly summing up the work of the RYA.

HRH PRINCESS ROYAL AWARDS OUTSTANDING RYA VOLUNTEERS

HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, presented the annual RYA Community and RYA Awards at the 2009 RYA AGM yesterday (Thursday 19 November)

A total of 49 volunteer awards were presented to winners hailing from across the UK from as far afield as the Isle of Wight to Scotland.

This year, an RYA Honorary Life Membership Award was presented to Eddie Ramsden MBE for his extraordinary and unique contribution to sailing for the last 30 years. Eddie has previously worked as Chairman of the Welsh Yachting Association and is now currently serving on the RYA Paralympic Steering Group.

BARTON LEND A HAND TO 'BOATING ON A BUDGET' CAMPAIGN

Barton Marine, one of the world's leading manufacturers of marine deck hardware has lent their support to the RNLI lifeboat station in Burnham-on-Crouch which is trying to raise money for their boathouse appeal.

The volunteer crew at the lifeboat station is restoring an abandoned sailboat which will be raffled off at the upcoming Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show, and Barton Marine has donated over £700 worth of products to help aid the team's project.

SUCCESSFUL PSP SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW LIFTS INDUSTRY MOOD

The PSP Southampton Boat Show, the UK’s leading outdoor social event showcasing boating, watersports and lifestyle, draws to a close today (Sunday 20 September) reporting strong attendance and increased confidence.  Since opening on 11 September, the PSP Southampton Boat Show has attracted 121,671 visitors, which is 282 more than last year.

Organiser National Boat Shows (NBS) is delighted with the success of the Show, which has hosted more than 500 exhibitors and showcased almost 1,000 boats, from 1.6 metre inflatables at £389 to 130ft motor yachts costing £10.6m. The Show has offered an important platform for the marine industry to display its quality and diversity, from power and sail boats to dinghies, deck equipment, charter holidays, sailing courses, chandlery and more.

TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW - OVER 70 NEW PRODUCTS TO BE LAUNCHED

THE CORPS OF ROYAL ENGINEERS DOCKS AT THE TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

The Royal Engineers will make history by appearing at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show for the first time since the Show began in 1954.

The Corps of Royal Engineers will bring an impressive collection of military boats that will be displayed both on the water and on land outside ExCeL, London, where the Show will run for 10 days from Friday 8 – Sunday 17 January.

Visitors will be treated to dramatic demonstrations of the military craft in action three times a day on the Royal Victoria dock for the duration of the Show. A Support Boat and Rigid Raider will wow crowds on the water as The Royal Engineers give insight into their lives as British soldiers who play a vital role in the effectiveness of the British Army as well as the Navy and RAF.

SAM DAVIES CROWNED YJA PANTAENIUS YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR

Today, British solo yachtswoman Sam Davies won the coveted title of YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year for 2009. 

The announcement was made at an awards ceremony held at Trinity House, London.  Portsmouth born Sam, now based in Concarneau, France, was first placed Briton in the French Vendée Globe 2008/09 singlehanded non-stop round the world race in her Open 60 yacht ‘Roxy’.

The 36 year old was the first woman, finishing third overall.  Recently she completed the Transat Jacque Vabre transatlantic race, finishing 10th with team mate Sidney Gavignet. She was also nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award last year.

Ocean Kayak has introduced the Torque Angler, an innovative fishing kayak which has been custom built to take a drop-in Minn Kota electric motor unit.

The compact motor module weighs just 20lbs (9kg) and simply slots in place in a large scupper behind the seat. When it is not required a detachable skeg can be fitted so the Torque functions as a standard kayak.

The motor plugs into an outlet at the back of the kayak and the battery goes in a sealed battery box in the centre. Because motor and battery are separate, removable units it makes them easy to handle, optimizes the kayak’s trim and keeps it light for transportation.

THE GX1100E FROM STANDARD HORIZON: THEIR MOST COMPACT FIXED VHF DSC RADIO YET

Phil and Ben were voted RYA Southern Regional Young Sailors of the Year 2009 last autumn. They won Gold in their 420 on the final day of the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Brazil.

They also won first place in the Kiel Week regatta and third place in the 420 Class Worlds at Lake Garda.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO OWN A BOAT TO COMPETE IN BRITAIN’S FAVOURITE YACHT RACE

Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race participants are fortunate enough to own their own boats, the Race also hosts numerous weekend charterers, some of whom may only have done a limited amount of cruising or racing and there are some who have never even set foot on a boat before.

Most charter companies will provide a professional skipper and mate to introduce a novice crew to the delights of this iconic Race, whilst other chartered yachts are skippered and crewed entirely by amateurs.

FREE RIB DRIVING TASTER SESSIONS WITH THE RYA AT THE SPORTSBOAT AND RIB SHOW 2010

At this year’s Sportsboat and RIB show, held at Ocean Village Marina, Southampton over the weekend of 22 – 23 May, visitors will have the opportunity to get behind the throttle of a RIB and pick up some basic boat handling skills at the RYA’s free RIB driving taster sessions.

Under the watchful eyes of an RYA instructor anyone over the age of eight years old can come and have a go.  Following a five minute briefing drivers will enjoy 15 minutes buzzing around the marina picking up some top boat handling tips.

Running throughout the weekend places will be on a first come first served basis.

HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL UNVEILS YACHTMASTER® OF THE YEAR 2009

Alexander Tilleray from Esher, Surrey has been crowned RYA Yachtmaster® of the Year 2009 and today was presented with his award by HRH The Princess Royal at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show.

Alex, 27, was selected for the top award despite fierce competition from almost 2,800 Yachtmaster® candidates worldwide who qualified last year. Alex took his Yachtmaster® exam on 20 February 2009 and passed with flying colours. 

The award winner has to rise to the top from a raft of nominees who all show outstanding skills and knowledge as a skipper. Candidates were entered by the RYA’s worldwide team of Yachtmaster® examiners.

COWES WEEK RIDES HIGH ON THE SOLENT WAVES

Cowes Week 2010 was the most thrilling yet with changeable weather conditions making for a week of fast-paced and exciting racing for the 896 entries and around 8,000 sailors who were competing. Coupled with the associated events of the Extreme Sailing Series, Artemis Challenge and 1851 Cup, new classes to the regatta*, and a pop-up restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Robert Thompson, Cowes Week was a must-attend event this summer.

The largest class racing at Cowes Week this year was the XOD fleet with 88 boats making for a hugely competitive class. This made victory all the more sweet for the winning boat, Catherine, who not only won her class but also took the glory as the overall winner of the White Group.

Cowes, Isle of Wight: Sunday dawned bright, warm and sunny as hundreds of competitors from the 79th edition of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race headed for the Island Sailing Club (ISC) to the event prizegiving to be honoured with their gold and silverware spoils after a superbly successful J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race yesterday.

The race is being regarded by Organisers, Sponsors, Race Partners and the all-important 1700+ competitors as one of the most successful on record.

ITV1’S ALL AT SEA STARS OPEN THE PSP SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW

Fresh from sailing around the south coast of England for ITV1’s recent All At Sea three-part series, Dawn Porter and Nick Hancock officially marked the opening of the PSP Southampton Boat Show in Mayflower Park today, Friday 10 September. 

Taking advantage of their new-found sea legs, Dawn and Nick arrived into the Show’s marina onboard an original World War Two RAF high speed rescue launch.  Completing the line up, a World War Two Royal Navy Motor Gunboat and the Grace Spitfire ML 407 helped to kick off the celebrations.

PETERS & MAY SAVES THE DAY FOR HYDRA-SPORTS BOAT DELIVERED TO THE SHOW

Last minute refinements meant that the cutting-edge 2500 VX Vector Series Fishing Boat was transported by the leader in global logistics, Peters & May, via air, road and sea to Southampton in advance of the Show.

The 25 foot boat arrived in the UK within just three days of departing the US factory, travelling over 5,000 miles.

GREEN BLUE - ANNUAL CONFERENCE A SUCCESS

The Green Blue’s annual conference held yesterday (04 November) has been heralded a huge success with delegates discovering how to make their businesses and clubs more environmentally friendly and save money in the process.

The Green Blue, a joint RYA and BMF initiative, hosted the conference entitled ‘Success and Sustainability for the UK Recreational Marine Sector’ which looked at ways to use sustainability to drive performance and cut costs.

Seventy-five representatives from marine businesses and sailing clubs from across the country and as far as the Netherlands turned up to the event which was held at an appropriately environmentally friendly venue, Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre in London.

THE EVEN KEEL PROJECT IS GOING GLOBAL IN 2010

Sailing is one of very few sports in which having a physical disability does not have to be a disadvantage. Through its adaptive sailing programme, The Even Keel Project is providing able bodied and disabled enthusiasts with the opportunity to participate together in a sailing activity that would otherwise be normally outside their reach.

Of particular note at the start of the new sailing season is the developing interest from overseas organisations in establishing centres of excellence through The Even Keel Project in their regions, particularly in the USA, Netherlands and Ireland.

After a busy weekend exhibiting on the Sailability stand at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, The Even Keel Project is now gearing up for The British Leisure Show at Windsor Racecourse between 19-21 March (on Stand BW410)

Guernsey and Jersey’s young rib drivers were out in force this weekend (Saturday, 07th August) when they competed against each other in the Channel Islands regional final of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship to win a place in the National Final to be held at the PSP Southampton Boat Show next month.

Hosted in the waters off Guernsey Yacht Club, in overcast conditions and westerly force 3 winds, the youngsters blasted round the pre-set course against the clock in a bid to post the quickest time possible avoiding penalties for incorrect manoeuvres on their way around.

LONDON BOAT SHOW OPENS TO CELEBRATE BOATING

The London International Boat Show returns to ExCeL today, Friday 9 January 2009, to celebrate 55 years of bringing the best of boating to the nation’s capital.

The Show was officially launched at 11.00am today by model, actress and TV presenter Kelly Brook.
