CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD RACE - SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA TAKES LINE HONOURS IN QINGDAO

In a race that has thrown everything at the crews and seen positions on the leader board change daily, Spirit of Australia has claimed their first victory of Clipper 09-10. Having moved into the lead five days ago, the Australian team were able to hold their nerve at the front of the fleet and crossed the finish line at 1307 local time on Saturday 20th February.

“Spirit of Australia is number one into Qingdao!” exclaimed skipper Brendan Hall as they crossed the line. “After an incredibly tough race, we have come through and snatched a victory all of us can be proud of and remember.

GO WEST! MARINA MARBELLA UK MOVES HQ

The UK division of Marina Marbella, Europe’s biggest motorboat retailer, is moving its headquarters from Hamble Point Marina to new premises in Poole.

This April, after almost 20 years on Firefly Road at Hamble Point Marina in Southampton, Marina Marbella UK will be moving a short hop westwards along the coast to new premises in Parkstone Bay Marina in Poole, Dorset. The new offices are located amongst some of Europe’s most popular leisure boating waters, between Poole Quay and the prestigious Sandbanks neighbourhood.

TULLETT PREBON CONTINUE BOAT SHOW SPONSORSHIP FOR FURTHER THREE YEARS

National Boat Shows (NBS) is delighted to announce that Tullett Prebon is to continue its sponsorship of the London International Boat Show for a further three years. 

The UK-listed global inter-dealer broker (IDB), which sponsored the Show for the first time in January, has committed to being the title sponsor of the next three London Shows.  The events, from 2011 to 2013, will continue to be known as the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show.

NANNY CAY CHALLENGE FOR ROUND TORTULA RECORD

Nanny Cay, the British Virgin Islands’ flagship resort and marina, has launched the Nanny Cay Challenge for the round Tortola record. 

Yachts visiting the British Virgin Islands are invited to make an attempt to beat the latest round Tortola records which have been established by the monohull and multihull times set in the 2009 PegLegs Round Tortola Race.

The current multihull and overall record is held by Triple Jack, a Kelsal 47 trimaran with a time of 3 hours, 33 minutes, 27 seconds.  The monohull time to beat of 4 hours, 15 minutes and 5 seconds, was set by Dave West’s Jurakan, a Melges 32.

POWERBOAT RACING CHAMPIONS HONOURED AT RYA GALA AWARDS CEREMONY

Powerboating champions from across the UK came together over the weekend (Saturday 6 February) for the annual RYA National Powerboat Racing Awards Ceremony.

Held at the prestigious De Vere Royal Bath hotel in Bournemouth, 50 of the UK’s best racers, starting from just age 12, from the disciplines of Jet sport, Offshore and Circuit racing claimed their awards, recognising their achievements throughout the 2009 season in front of some 150 friends, family and supporters.

The evening was hosted by one of the United Kingdom’s leading powerboat racers and the first female British champion in her field, Shelley Jory Leigh who was part of the first all female team to win a Powerboat P1 SuperSport Grand Prix...

HIGH SPIRITS CONFIRMED FOR THE 2010 ROUND THE ISLAND RACE!

Entries for this year’s J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race are coming in thick and fast via the Race website at www.roundtheisland.org.uk and the Entries team at the Island Sailing Club reports that the first entry received was from an eager Steve Le Butt for his Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 High Spirits.

This is Steve’s 9th consecutive year of entering the Race but last year’s circumnavigation turned out to be somewhat more action-packed than he had first anticipated as he crossed the Royal Yacht Squadron start line in Cowes.  His race culminated in him being awarded the inaugural ‘Nautica Outstanding Seamanship Award’ after his crew nominated him for his skill and judgement in assisting in a man overboard incident during the day.

CLIPPER 09/10 ROUND THE WORLD RACE - LEG 6 START

The general consensus amongst the teams today is the need to focus and get back into the routine of offshore racing following an exceptional stopover in Singapore.

"It takes time to settle in after a long stop over and for people to find their sea legs again," explains Edinburgh Inspiring Capital's skipper, Matt Pike. "But, after a great stop in Singapore, we left in perfect conditions - a good north easterly breeze allowing us to hold full canvas as we headed out into the South China Sea.

A busy night of shipping and total concentration to hold us hard against the wind left little doubt we were back racing! The early morning positions showed it had been a good night's work and the fleet was tightly packed.

OFFICIAL HANDOVER OF NEW £4m RYA PORTLAND HOUSE

A £4 million multi purpose facility for the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) at Osprey Quay on Portland in Dorset has been formally handed over.

RYA Portland House has been developed by regeneration company the Sutton Harbour Group in partnership with the South West RDA (Regional Development Agency) and will be the hub of performance sailing in the run up to and during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It is the first phase of Sutton Harbour’s £30 million leisure and tourism development called Castle Court near Portland Castle, and the latest development to take shape at Osprey Quay where the RDA is investing £40 million to transform the former Royal Navy Air Station into a major employment centre with up to 1,400 jobs by 2016.
