Two years ago, the Gill R&D team were given a simple brief – to design the best lightweight race gear for sailing, with specific emphasis on hot and sunny conditions.
The most detailed research project ever undertaken by the Gill team was put in place. Meetings were held with teams at the top of the game, from the TP52, to the Laser SB3 racing team, to committed weekend warriors.
Members of the Gill Race Team were consulted on their ideal wish list for a collection of specific racing gear.
The Australian team finished at 0929 local time (0229 UTC) after closing a 20-mile gap on Cape Breton Island in the final 12 hours of the race. Race 5, from Geraldton, Western Australia to Singapore began on 3 January and the course has delivered some of the most challenging conditions to date for the crews, all of whom have put their normal lives on hold to take part in the Clipper Race, whether for a single leg, or for the whole of the ten-month, 35,000-mile race.
During the race Cork, one of the ten 68-foot ocean racing yachts, hit a submerged reef and the crew, who had abandoned to life rafts, were taken on board two of the other boats.

Alexander Tilleray from Esher, Surrey has been crowned RYA Yachtmaster® of the Year 2009 and today was presented with his award by HRH The Princess Royal at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show.
Alex, 27, was selected for the top award despite fierce competition from almost 2,800 Yachtmaster® candidates worldwide who qualified last year. Alex took his Yachtmaster® exam on 20 February 2009 and passed with flying colours.
The award winner has to rise to the top from a raft of nominees who all show outstanding skills and knowledge as a skipper. Candidates were entered by the RYA’s worldwide team of Yachtmaster® examiners.
Cork, Ireland, one of ten 68-foot ocean racing yachts competing in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race has struck a rock in the Java Sea, around 200 nautical miles north east of Jakarta. All 16 crew were safely evacuated to the island and subsequently to two sister yachts, Team Finland and California. Falmouth Coastguard is working with local agencies to ensure that the situation is being constantly monitored. Next of Kin of all those on board have been informed and all crew are safe and accounted for.
Digital Yacht have launched their new SmarterTrack PC Navigator software which brings electronic charting and real time navigation to an onboard PC.
It’s supplied complete with a USB card reader which can accept standard Navionics Gold (or Platinum) CF and SD format chart cartridges.
These are the same charts used by many popular chart plotters including Raymarine, Lowrance and Humminbird, so the same cartridge can be used by the dedicated chart plotter and the PC - a welcome saving.
Today, British solo yachtswoman Sam Davies won the coveted title of YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year for 2009.
The announcement was made at an awards ceremony held at Trinity House, London. Portsmouth born Sam, now based in Concarneau, France, was first placed Briton in the French Vendée Globe 2008/09 singlehanded non-stop round the world race in her Open 60 yacht ‘Roxy’.
The 36 year old was the first woman, finishing third overall. Recently she completed the Transat Jacque Vabre transatlantic race, finishing 10th with team mate Sidney Gavignet. She was also nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award last year.

Phil Sparks from Muddiford and Ben Gratton from Guildford were presented with the prestigious YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award 2009 at the Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday 9th January 2010.
The award was presented by sailing legend Ben Ainslie CBE, a previous winner himself.
Phil and Ben were voted RYA Southern Regional Young Sailors of the Year 2009 last autumn. They won Gold in their 420 on the final day of the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Brazil.
They also won first place in the Kiel Week regatta and third place in the 420 Class Worlds at Lake Garda.
