Southampton based Discovery Yachts launches its much heralded Discovery 50 Cat at this year's Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show.

Designed by the renowned Bill Dixon, with an interior styled by Superyacht specialist Ken Freivokh, the Discovery 50 Cat is the first multihull from this highly respected British yard which has gained an enviable reputation for its 55 and 67 foot ocean going monohulls.

TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW OFFICIALLY OPEN

The Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show returned to ExCeL today, Friday 8 January 2009, to celebrate 56 years of bringing the best of boating to the nation’s capital.

The Show was officially opened at 11:00am by singers Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs.

The talented pair recently charmed the nation and shot to fame through ITV 1’s The X Factor.

Today they proved their star quality whilst performing live before posing for a nautical photo call with members of the Royal Engineers.

Running from 8th – 17th January, the Show will feature hundreds of boats and with some 500 exhibitors showcasing power and sail boats, dinghies, engines, electronics, deck equipment, charter holidays, sailing courses and more, there’s no better way to discover the thrills of getting on the water.

ADY GIL RAMMED BY JAPANESE WHALER

The powered trimaran Ady Gil, known as Earthrace during her biofuelled circumnavigation, has had 8ft of its bow sliced off by Japanese whaling vessel the Shonan Maru II. Five of her crew, one with cracked ribs, have been airlifted off but recent reports suggest her skipper, Kiwi Pete Bethune, is staying onboard to salvage either the boat or some equipment.

Paul Watson, head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, new owners of the Ady Gil, told Kyodo News the Shonan Maru II, a vessel sent by Japan to ensure the security of its whaling fleet, deliberately rammed his group's US$1.8 million vessel Ady Gil and ''sheared the bow right off.''

X FACTOR STARS STACEY SOLOMON AND OLLY MURS SET TO OPEN THE TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

X Factor finalists Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs will officially open the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show held at ExCeL London at 11:00am on Friday 8 January, kicking off 10 of the busiest days in the country’s boating calendar.
 
After catching the judges’ eyes with her soulful version of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World, Stacey went on to be the last girl standing, reaching the final three of the competition, while heart-throb Olly battled through to the grand final where he faced overall winner Joe McElderry. 
 
To kick start the New Year, Essex’s favourite new singing sensations will perform live on the Show Stage Powered by Fairline to declare the Show open, before posing for a photo call with members of the Royal Engineers.

Salterns Boatyard has announced that Goldfish Boats' flagship, the Goldfish 36P1 Super Sport RIB will be entering the greatly anticipated 2012 Round Britain Race. This follows their success in the 2008 race where the 36 emphatically won her class, breaking the record for the fastest RIB around Britain along the way.

General Manager of Salterns Boatyard and member of the record breaking 2008 team, James Sydenham will once again take part, alongside the father and son duo, Stuart and Steven Munro of Nautic Marine Services in Poole, the new owners of the Goldfish 36 having moved up from a Goldfish 29.

GEOFF HOLT COMPLETES ATLANTIC CROSSING

British yachtsman Geoff Holt became the first quadriplegic to sail across the Atlantic when he crossed the finish line in the Caribbean on Thursday.

The sailor battled light winds, mechanical problems and running out of fuel aboard his boat, Impossible Dream, during the voyage where he has been aided by a carer and filmed by a cameraman - but he did all his own sailing.

Poignantly, he returned to the exact scene of the diving accident that paralysed him 26 years ago - Cane Garden Bay, on Tortola island.

EXERCISE TRANSGLOBE UPDATE - TRANSGLOBE REVERTS TO A CRUISING EXERCISE FOR LEG 7

Becky Walford starts her New Year on a high as the skipper of Exercise TRANSGLOBE’s RAF yacht, Discoverer that was awarded the Oggin Cup for beating her rival Navy and Army yachts in the recently successfully completed Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.

The Oggin Cup inter-services trophy was presented to Becky and her crew by the CYCA (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia). Becky was also awarded the Jane Tate Memorial Trophy, awarded to the first woman skipper on corrected time.

Becky steered Discoverer (RAF) to the Hobart finish line in 04:08:43:44.
Adventure of Hornet (Navy) completed the Sydney Hobart Race in 04:14:00:25.
The 3rd Transglobe yacht Challenger of Hornet (Army) finished the Sydney Hobart Race in 04:15:32:55.

CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD RACE - SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA FIRST ACROSS START LINE

Spirit of Australia was first across the start line to the delight of the home crowd as Race 5 of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race got underway.

Hundreds of supporters lined the breakwater in Geraldton, Western Australia, and cheered as the Australian team raced past with the other nine internationally sponsored yachts in hot pursuit.

Conditions were perfect for the beginning of the next leg to Singapore with a strong southerly breeze blowing 15-20 knots.
