VENDEE GLOBE - OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN AT LAST 23 December 2008 (290 reads)
The group chasing Michel Desjoyeaux have been waiting for an opportunity to gain after the past few days’ drag race — could this be it?
Foncia, along with second-placed Veolia Environment, is currently being slowed by a high pressure zone which has been building to the east of Campbell Island. What’s more, things look set to get no more straightforward for the leaders, with a low pressure system in the Cook Straits moving towards the south.

| FRENCH ROV REPAIRS MED CABLES 22 December 2008 (455 reads)
A French ship has begun repairing two undersea cables in the Mediterranean that were severed on Friday, disrupting internet and phone communications.
An ROV will locate the ends of the cables on the sea bed and bring them to the surface to be re-connected. They were cut within 5 minutes of each other, possibly by a trawler net.

| VOLVO OCEAN RACE - TELEFONICA BLUE WINS LEG THREE 22 December 2008 (285 reads)
Anders Lewander, Ericsson 3, post-finish: “It’s been so enormously tough all of this leg…but it’s been really amazing. I’ve really enjoyed this leg because of the close tactics and the mix of conditions. It’s hard work but the close encounter and the whole situation on this leg has been really challenging.
“I must admit that at several occasions during this leg I truly believed we were able to win. I’m really proud and happy about our achievement…this short gybing and close encounters is really good racing.

| VENDEE GLOBE - PACE CONTINUES AT HALFWAY POINT - ELIES ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA 22 December 2008 (281 reads)
If there is a halfway point in the ever-changing line around the globe that the Vendée Globe skippers are tracking along, then with around 11,500 miles to go the leaders have now passed it.
But after 42 days at sea, and 12 retirements, the battle at the front of the fleet is still as white-hot as ever.
Overnight, race leader Michel Desjoyeaux passed the tip of New Zealand’s south island and now has just three gates — New Zealand, West and East Pacific — between him and Cape Horn. Foncia is still sailing at speeds of around 17 knots, a pace even the leading group of Jourdain (Veolia Environment), Josse (BT) and Le Cam (VM Matériaux) are struggling to keep up with.

| VENDEE GLOBE - NO WHITE CHRISTMAS 21 December 2008 (331 reads)
The leaders continue to drag race towards the New Zealand gate this evening, newly moved north in order to bring the fleet away from the ice risk below the West Pacific and East Pacific gates — not everyone will be hoping for a white Christmas this winter.
Previous editions have seen this section of the race dotted with icebergs — in 2004, Jean Le Cam took the lead on 20th December. Two days later, he informs Race HQ that he has seen a dozen icebergs, and on the 23rd December 2004, Sébastien Josse hits a growler and breaks his bowsprit. That Christmas Day, Mike Golding added his concerns after seeing some more icebergs.

| VOLVO OCEAN RACE - LEAVING LAS VEGAS 21 December 2008 (301 reads)
Torben Grael and Ericsson 4 have seen their lead ground into dust in the last 24 hours, but the jury is out on whether it’s beneath the wheels of a tank, or broken and busted on the roulette tables of Las Vegas. No one likes it when it’s more casino than race course out there, but it’s hard to leave Las Vegas when you’re on a winning streak…
At 10:00 ZULU, Telefonica Blue were on a serious winning streak, rumbling up the beaches of Malaysia to finally take back the lead that they held across the Bay of Bengal. Ericsson 3 are hard on their heels and up into second, with PUMA (struggling for speed recently, for no obvious reason) up into third, while Ericsson 4 fought desperately to get inshore with them, and to stop the losses.

Yann Elies, the skipper of Generali who broke his left femur on December 18, has been successfully transferred to the Australian Navy’s HMAS Arunta, an Anzac Class Frigate.
The Arunta reached Generali, around 850 miles south-south-east of Perth this morning, and at around 0940h (GMT) a RIB came alongside Generali. Two personnel were immediately dispatched on board the yacht to assess Yann Elies’ condition, while the Arunta remained around 200 metres upwind of Generali, holding station to provide a lee shelter.
