Zapcat Racing - Edinburgh GP Report
Avoid the coconuts!

Ocean Terminal, Leith Docks, Edinburgh - home to Britannia and host to the only Scottish and City Championship venue this year.

Fantastic warm sunshine welcomed the teams, the majority having travelled up from the south coast of England facing the prospect of a tight, technical and tactical course in front of a large number of spectators keen to see lots of high speed Zapcat action on the flat water.

Friday "press day" saw STV Scotland Today reporter Liz Monaghan try a Zapcat for the first time and the footage broadcast on the evening news adding to the pre event publicity.

Following briefings and final adjustments to the course, the Zapcats were launched in their unique fashion as there is no accessible slipway inside Western Harbour.

Supporters took advantage of not only the sunshine but also every vantage point quayside and in the bars and restaurants to follow the racing as the early heats got under way.  With slightly fewer teams than expected both weight classes were mixed together, with the ZCR50 & 50X teams securing their own points in their first task of qualification for the round finals.

Some very interesting and entertaining duels despite the weight disparities with first time Father and Daughter combo of Neil and Laura Frazer leading the way and the Exe Jets putting in consistent first place finishes despite being "two full fuel tanks heavier"  when compared to Angry Hornet.  Crest of a Wave, Trademymotor, Team Suffolk, Speedy Hire, Team Essence and Bluesheets I & II were also contesting well and putting in some useful performances throughout the day in particular the current champions who were narrowly defeated in Edinburgh last year.

The ZCR50X final went true to qualifying form with Rob Wickham and James Roberts in Exe Jets taking the Round win closely followed by Trademymotor and Team Essence.

The lightweight ZCR50 crews then lined up for their final, however right in front of all the spectators Angry Hornet flipped in the turn with their engine clipping and holing Speedy Hire.

Unfortunately for Daren in Speedy he took a blow to the shoulder from the propeller guard which with an unprotected propeller could have been far more serious, the Safety Team and Paramedics acted as always in a very professional manner and dealt with the incident, whilst Daren took a trip to hospital for a precautionary check up the remaining teams restarted their final.

Bluesheets I took full advantage with a Round win with another Father & Daughter combo of Greg and Adelle in Team Suffolk beating Bluesheets II into a first third place of the season.

Following a very sociable evening and a delayed prize giving Sundays' heats got under way at midday with a couple of crew changes to Angry Hornet and Speedy Hire who shared hull, co-pilot and engine with Team Essence!

With the best part of a 500 mile drive south Sunday it is a case of cracking on through the heats and the finals so that everyone can get away with plenty of daylight remaining but there is still a matter of lots of points to fight for another pair of Round finals and the Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh Zapcat GP trophy as well as the bonus of the City Championship too.

So all eyes were on Bluesheets I and Exe Jets and could Rob & James maintain their maximum points haul and outscore Craig & Robbie and grab their first GP win which they have come so close to already this season.

Angry Hornet were certainly in the mood to increase their points total and position after their swim the previous evening and they really did not want to disappoint!

After the heats were done the 50X final got under way and was another very close battle with Exe Jets, Trademymotor and Team Essence taking the same places as the day before.

All eyes or certainly those of Exe Jets were on the ZCR50 final and would there be an upset to the form sheet?  Rob and James were pretty safe in the knowledge that whatever the result they would win the GP title on countback but had not realised they would pick up the City Championship or a couple of apartments for a weekend provided by sponsors Serviced Apartments International.

Despite their best efforts Angry Hornet were narrowly beaten by Bluesheets I but finished ahead of Team Suffolk.

Overall a great weekend with a new GP winner for the season, the most mixed teams and female competitors at any event since Belfast last year, some very appreciative supporters, stunning weather and a reminder of the importance of propeller guards, especially on a flat water course.

So why the reference to Coconuts?  All weekend teams were pinging their propeller guards despite the Safety team sweeping for debris - and guess what were found just below the surface at the end of the day, not a surprise really considering Leith is a commercial port and has many visiting cruise liners.

Rounds 7 & 8 will be from Barry Island, Whitmore Bay Beach on Sat 6 & Sun 7 August.
