Zapcat Racing abolishes race fees for the 2012 season

Announced today, Zapcat Racing has made the bold decision to remove race fees for all entrants to the 2012 Zapcat National Championship.

This shrewd move puts the class well ahead of any other and ultimately means racers will pay less than £5 per race after they have paid their annual class membership and RYA race license fees!

“It is very simple we have a couple of long-distance venues scheduled for this summer and we want to give every team the chance to compete in all Grand Prix events as well as ensure that sponsors and spectators are rewarded with as many teams as possible competing so far from home.” said Event Organiser, Martin Jupp.

Zapcat Racing - Blue Sheets Racing claims another National Championship title

Blue Sheets Racing claimed a Zapcat National title for the third year in a row at Fistral, Cornwall last weekend. Although pilot Craig Davis was shore-bound with a leg injury, the team still managed to race, with former racing adversary Jack Weller stepping in for the last two rounds.

Jack and co-pilot Rob Martin had some fast and furious racing over the weekend, battling with Team Suffolk and Angry Hornet amongst others to finish first on Friday and second on Saturday. This was enough to secure the overall National title (ZCR50 class) but left them a point short for the coveted Natioanl Surf Chapions award.

Congratulations to Craig, Jack and Rob for a great effort during the season.

Congratulations also, to Exe Jets, winners of the National Championships (ZCR50x class), as well as Team Suffolk, Angry Hornet, Live Wire, Team Essence, TradeMyMotor and all who raced this season.

Zapcat Racing - Sunshine, waterspouts and lightning in Wales

Zapcat Racing returned to Whitmore Bay for the third year in a row thanks to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and assistance of everyone in Barry Island who helped to make this very popular venue and event happen once again.

For the Friday press day we were joined by Courtenay Hamilton (Miss Wales 2010) along with team Speedy Hire stand in pilot Justin Whithorn and co-pilot Kelly Allen with very flat and sunny conditions great for the gathered photographers who saw Courtenay co-pilot and pilot a Zapcat for the very first time.

“That was awesome, so amazing!” was heard quite a few times!

Zapcat Racing - Pilot (now spectator) interview

Daren – thank you for joining us today it must be difficult with the upcoming Barry Island GP knowing that you will just be a spectator, tell us what happened in the Round 5 final at Edinburgh?

We got caught up with #25 (Angry Hornet) and #73 (Bluesheets II) and came out with 7ft rip in the side of our boat and a dinked collarbone, no one’s fault that’s racing even worse #25 is my team mate.

I know you don’t try and make a habit of these things but you always seem to have at least one fairly spectacular racing incident each season along with a handful of spills and flips – when you are on the beach at Barry in a couple of weeks do you think you will relive in your mind how you felt last year with Sam?

Fantastic warm sunshine welcomed the teams, the majority having travelled up from the south coast of England facing the prospect of a tight, technical and tactical course in front of a large number of spectators keen to see lots of high speed Zapcat action on the flat water.

Friday "press day" saw STV Scotland Today reporter Liz Monaghan try a Zapcat for the first time and the footage broadcast on the evening news adding to the pre event publicity.

Zapcat Racing - Wet and windy Gosport GP

Gosport residents and one of the longest serving Zapcat teams, Russell & Sandra Sidney said before the weekend, "We may be slightly biased but with easy boat launching and beach access as well as perfect viewing for spectators and the very variable conditions even in summer, Stokes Bay is a great venue; from flat calm seas giving quick and close up racing to a heavy chop producing a very hard and physical challenge, often with very unpredictable results."

They were spot on except they omitted the driving rain on Sunday contrasting the sunshine of Saturday.

Round 3 of the Zapcat National Championships kicked off with calm and sunny conditions, with a couple more Rookie teams joining the competition as well as three mixed (male & female) teams for 16 heats and two finals.

Well you can ask the very surprised winner of the Grand Prix Craig Davis, Pilot of Bluesheets I and current two times defending National and Surf Champion "AWESOME RACING!"

Craig went on to say "With the new rules changes and Angry Hornet beating us yesterday in our class, the GP title was wide open, Rob and I loved the difficulty of the conditions and to find out we had won on a count back was great!"

Zapcat Racing - Last minute sponsors power event forward!

With only a few days to go before the first event of the season at Fistral Beach, Newquay, we have added some very exciting new sponsors as well as a superb evening attraction, the inaugural Rattler Rock Night.

Delays from earlier in the year as well as the gloomy economic conditions had left the organisers and the venue very little time to secure the sponsorship needed ensuring the safe running and promotion of the Zapcat Racing event but the recent weather has been of huge benefit.

“This is the first time I can really recall a sustained period of unseasonal sunny weather together with several bank holidays combining to have a very positive effect on the town and local businesses” said Nick Webb, Events Manager for the International Surf Centre.

Zapcat Racing - 2011 championship rules published

After what seems to have been many weeks of discussion with race teams and officials Zapcat Racing can finally announce that we have published the 2011 Championship Rules and these are available to download.

Competing teams will need to read this document in full as there are many changes that have been made, probably the most comprehensive set of rule updates in certainly the last 5 years.

We believe that all the changes will be enthusiastically welcomed by the teams and allows for an even more competitive championship structure as well as accommodating the introduction of the new race hull.
