Italian Powerboat P1 SuperSport class outfit Team Al & Al have revealed that they will be contesting the 2009 season with two boats.
Alfredo Nuzzo and Alfredo Amato finished seventh in the SuperSport standings in 2008 in their Mercury-powered Carpenter 38 hull, #22 Big Sergio, named in honour of the late Sergio Carpentieri.

A new, budding Powerboat P1 team from the Ukraine is set to unveil its plans to contest the SuperSport class in 2009.
The as-yet-unnamed outfit – the first team from an Eastern European country to contest offshore racing’s fastest growing championship – will announce its line-up in Malta on February 20-21.

| CLASS ONE - REBUILT QATAR 96 - A ‘NEW’ AND VERY DIFFERENT BOAT 29 January 2009 (450 reads)
Qatar 96 throttleman, Steve Curtis, says that their rebuilt raceboat will be ‘virtually new’ and will bear little resemblance to the old Championship winning, ‘Spirit of Norway’.
Following Sheikh Hassan and Curtis’ crash in qualifying in Doha last year, which all but destroyed the team’s number one boat, Qatar 96 has been almost totally rebuilt.
The main rebuild of the hull and deck was carried out at Nicolini Offshore’s facility near Lake Lecco in Italy, before being moved to the team’s second European base in Norway, where Curtis has spent the early part of 2009 overseeing the crucial re-rigging before the boat is shipped to Qatar at the end of February to test in March.

The month’s of January and February are traditionally “boat show” season around the world in the Northern Hemisphere and throughout Europe some of the biggest celebrates attending these weeklong events who race fans come to meet firsthand are skillful drivers who race on the U.I.M. F1 World Championship tour.
Two drivers who are working hard for their sponsors and promoting the sport at German pilot Fabian Kalsow at the world’s largest boat show in Düsseldorf, while Portuguese driver Duarte Benavente prepares for the upcoming Lisbon Boat Show running from the 7th to the 15th of February.

The new #26 Team Donzi Racing outfit has unveiled the new Donzi 38ZRC hull in which it hopes to be challenging for this year’s SuperSport class crown.
The outfit raced in the season-closing events in Spain and Portugal last year as #26 Team Konrad, scoring two points finishes in Spain and fourth place in the Portugal sprint. Pilots Dan Cramphorn and Kim Collins tested the new Donzi 38ZRC hull at the Bernico’s factory in Willebroek, Belgium, last weekend.

| POWERBOAT P1 MANUFACTURERS HEAD TO MIAMI 25 January 2009 (455 reads)
US-based Powerboat P1 hull and engine manufacturers are set to boast a significant presence at this year’s Miami International Boat Show at the Miami Beach Convention Centre on February 12-16. The event is a key part of the build-up for both the US and international offshore racing seasons.
Evolution-class hull manufacturers Cigarette, Douglas Marine (which produces the Skater hulls), Fountain Powerboats and Outerlimits are all on the exhibitors list, alongside SuperSport-class hull builders Hustler, Formula and Donzi. Engine manufacturers Mercury, Ilmor, Chief Engines, Yanmar and Cummins Mercruiser are also set to attend the event.

The 2009 UIM-WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship is set for an outstanding year, with Championship Organiser, IOTA (International Offshore Team Association), confirming one of the strongest line-ups of recent years, two new venues on the calendar - Alicante, Spain and Stresa, Italy - with a possible third new venue to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Speaking at today’s press conference at BOOT Düsseldorf, IOTA General Secretary, Marco Sala announced a 12 boat line-up for the season, which sees the 2007/8 Australian Offshore Champions, Maritimo, fielding a two-boat line-up, running their new Class 1 design, new pilots coming into the Championship and the likelihood of a new team and 13th boat to be confirmed.

Victory Team’s general manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, has confirmed that 2007 World and European Champion, Arif Saif Al Zafeen, will make a welcome return to racing this season to partner newly crowned 2008 World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position Champion, Nadir Bin Hendi, in Victory 1.
The move sees Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi rekindle a formidable partnership that saw them win the season opener in Qatar last year, before a serious back injury - sustained in a Formula 2 race - sidelined Al Zafeen, with the team drafting in the services of 2001 World Champion, Mohammed Al Marri, to replace him.

Nicola Giorgi is confident that the team can build on their success last season in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix in Dubai, where they took their first podium, finishing third.
“We carried out a lot of development with the new boat during 2008, but knew from the beginning we could have some reliability issues. It’s not just a matter of having a competitive boat, it’s the entire package that has to work perfectly to obtain good results,” said Nicola. “We tried three different engine solutions during the year, and at the end of the season we saw the result of a really competitive and reliable boat.

| SHELLEY JORY STARS AT LONDON BOAT SHOW 20 January 2009 (328 reads)
Powerboat P1 racer Shelley Jory was one of the star attractions at last week’s London Boat Show, held at the ExCeL centre in the heart of the British capital. The #77 Lucas Oil pilot talked about her rise to fame and her 2008 season, in which she and throttleman Nigel Hook finished sixth in the points.
Jory – the first woman to pilot an Evolution-class entry in Powerboat P1’s history – was one of the guest speakers invited to talk about their sporting and lives on the Fairline Main Stage.
