Saturday saw the final round of the 2009 Zapcat National Championship at Watergate Bay in Newquay.
22 boats competed for the final points in their championship campaigns, Friday’s racing had seen Zapcat 03 BlueSheets Racing 1 Craig Davis and Rob Martin secure enough points to take them clear and uncatchable making them the 2009 Champions. But with the King of Surf title still up for grabs and 2nd and 3rd still undecided tensions were high heading into Saturdays racing as teams were working out what results were required for them to achieve their final goals.

CLASS 1 POWERBOATS - WELMAX LOOKING TO PRODUCE SOMETHING SPECIAL IN STRESA 27 September 2009 (391 reads)
Welmax wheelman, Kolbjorn Selmer, knows that he and Jorn Tandberg must produce something extra special in both races in the Italian Grand Prix in Stresa, 2-4 October, if throttleman Tandberg is to retain his European Crown.
After a series of frustrating incidents in the first two races of the season, the all-Norwegian pairing, who teamed up in the BMW Norwegian Grand Prix in Arendal, hit back in Mamaia-Constanta to take third place in qualifying in the Edox Pole Position and two race-podiums – third in race 1 and second in race 2 – to move into fourth place in the World and European Championship standings.

ZAPCAT RACING - BLUE SHEETS TAKES THE TITLE 26 September 2009 (987 reads)
The Zapcat Racing National Championship was decided today at Round 13 of at Watergate Bay, Newquay. Zapcat 03, BlueSheets Racing 1 Craig Davis and Rob Martin were favourites to take the championship going into the penultimate event and securing a place in the days final would cinch the deal.
Team Relentless got off to a storming start, with Zapcat 77, Exe Jets Rob Wickham and Graham Hay were taking high finishes in their heats along with Relentless –Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 Charlie Brickle and Adam Bushrod in their respective divisions.
Zapcat 38, Speedy Hire Daren Ford and Sam Hunka were storming away in their heats with Zapcat 25, Rana Park Neil Fraser and Jeremy Nazarin, fighting out with the second and third places in the championship still in contention.

POWERBOAT P1 - NO WHINING FROM CRANEFIELDS BOSS 26 September 2009 (803 reads)
Siegfried Greve has admitted that his Searex Racing Team has plenty to work on in the close season after the German outfit finished bottom of the standings in the Evolution-class in then2009 Powerboat P1 World Championship.
"Do I hope to be back next year?" asks the Hamburg-born driver. "Of course I do!
"I told the Powerboat P1 website last month that we will improve and we will do so. We showed over the weekend in Sicily that we have the performance, the boat and the pilots, particularly on the opening lap of Saturday's Sprint race.
"But even though we started very fast, it is clear we have to work on a lot of the technical issues. This is why we have suffered this year.

We’re now just a day away from the final event of the Zapcat National Championship 2009, and I know it gets said every year but this years looks set to be the closest run contest yet.
Ok, so it looks like but Bluesheets Racing 1 Zapcat 03, Craig Davis and Rob Martin have closed the door on the rest of the teams catching them but as last year taught us, at Watergate anything can happen and usually does and with 200 points still up for grabs they could still be caught. The real battle will be for 2nd & 3rd positions with less than 100 points separating current positions 2nd – 6th in the championship these two positions will be a tightly fought contest with each team still having everything to play for.

POWERBOAT P1 - NIGEL HOOKED ON SICILY 25 September 2009 (325 reads)

Those are the words of Nigel Hook, speaking of Powerboat P1 CEO Asif Rangoonwala, when questioned whether the thought of not competing in the final Grand Prix of the Sea in Sicily had crossed his mind. Hook's SV-43 Outerlimits hull barrel-rolled in a 100mph-plus accident in Gothenburg at the start of August which wrote off the boat, an incident which thankfully saw both the British-born driver and co-pilot Joe Sgro emerge relatively unscathed.

FORMULA FOUR STROKE - PREMIER CRU & LINGS STEAL THE THUNDER 21 September 2009 (403 reads)
Bright sunshine and clear blue skies greeted competitors for the final three races in the Honda Formula 4 Stroke Association sponsored by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. It was the final chance for some of the crews to get vital podium places with battles raging throughout the field in both classes.
Race three of 225hp the action went right down to the wire in the final rounds of the 2009 Formula 4 Stroke Association series with the last races in both championships decided the overall winners. The only 225hp race of the year was a straight battle between Lings.com and Team Williams, both crews separated by just three points at the start of the race. Both boats raced to the first buoy within inches of each other. Scott and Ken Williams squeezed out their rivals David Cowley and Paul Barkshire but in doing so let Heights of Abrahams with driver Rupert and navigator Sophie Pugh get into the lead, a position they maintained to the chequered flag.

OPENING ROUNDS IN DOUGLAS STIR UP THE FINAL FOR HONDA F4SA 19 September 2009 (371 reads)
It’s still all to play for as competitors head into the final rounds of the 2009 Honda Formula 4 Stroke Association powerboat Championship. Three races were held in Douglas Bay today (Saturday 19th) the first day of the Isle of Man Grand Prix.
The weather conditions were almost perfect with slight sea conditions not affecting the crews in their bid for the podiums places and overall honours. In the 225 races Team Williams took maximum points as they scored a double victory to close the gap on current Championship leaders Lings.com. The crew from the Wirral led from start to finish and dominated the race. Driver Scott Williams and navigator Ken Williams liked the conditions and the maximum points haul closed the gap at the top of the championship to just nine points.

POWERBOAT P1 - SLUSZNY SETS GOALS FOR 2010 19 September 2009 (318 reads)
Marc Sluszny has told his #17 Spirit of Belgium crew to target top spot next season.
Alongside team-mates Patrick Huybreghts and Micha Robijn, Sluszny helped the Belgian outfit to a fourth place finish in the overall SuperSport standings despite a limited financial budget which prevented major improvements to the Mercury-powered boat throughout 2009. And the keen bungee-jumper knows exactly what improvements need to be made in order to see them the challenge for the top spots.

FORMULA 4 STROKE HOLD FINALE IN ISLE OF MAN 17 September 2009 (216 reads)
The World’s largest two class offshore powerboat race series the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Association will hold their last race weekend in Douglas – Isle of Man on 19th and 20th September when they will reveal the 2009 championship winners of the Honda 150hp and 225hp classes.
The championship standings look likely to remain fairly solid for the remainder of the season; however anything could happen at the final event making the Douglas Bay Grand Prix an event not to be missed. The new 2009 Champions will be crowned on Sunday September 20th from Douglas Bay’s podium on the promenade in association with Three FM.
