POWERBOAT P1 SET FOR AWESOME 2009 SEASON

Powerboat P1 chairman Asif Rangoonwala has said that he’s looking forward to what could be a season to remember in 2009, as entries are received for the Evolution and SuperSport classes, and new and existing venues finalise their arrangements for a seven-strong list of Grands Prix from March to September.

POWERBOAT P1 - 2008 WAS YEAR FOR GROWTH

Powerboat P1 chairman Asif Rangoonwala has said that the 2008 season was one of the most significant in the championship’s recent history and growth. The number of teams in the Evolution and SuperSport classes swelled to new highs, while events in Italy, France, Tunisia and Spain bolstered old favourites in Malta and Portugal.

American-based hull manufacturer Cigarette joined the championship for the first time, while existing manufacturers Fountain, Skater and Outerlimits and engine manufacturers Ilmor, Mercury, Seatek and Chief were among the suppliers increasing their input and investment in the series during 2008.

#99 Fountain Worldwide 1st4boats.com team boss and throttleman Craig Wilson and pilot James Sheppard attended last weekend’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards show at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, as they continued their celebration of their back-to-back Evolution class championships.

Wilson and Sheppard were making their second appearance at the event, having attended the awards ceremony for Britain’s top sporting stars after their rookie title success in 2007.

It finally happened. Native son Thani Al Qamzi of Team Abu Dhabi put together a marvelous run and led from the first lap to the 50th and final tour to take his first victory of the season and his second in three years on the Khalid Lagoon to win the Ninth Grand Prix of Sharjah on the 8th and final round of the 2008 U.I.M. F1 World Championship in front of thousands of race fans in downtown Sharjah.

CLASS ONE - QATAR 95 WINS IN DUBAI

A phenomenal season finale saw Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini in Qatar 95, come from fourth place on the start grid to stun newly crowned World Champions Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi, in the Emirates & Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix to take their first win of the season.

Qatar 95, who had been fast all weekend, flew out of the blocks and was able to catch and overtake both Victory boats in a show of power and speed, within the first lap and a half of the race. "It was important that we ended the season with something to show for all our efforts," said Al-Sulaiti. "We expected it to be rough and the conditions really suited us and the boat."

SUPERSPORT TO SCREEN POWERBOAT P1 IN SOUTH AFRICA

Powerboat P1 has announced a key partnership with South African broadcaster SuperSport, which will deliver its World Championship series to over 2 million households across Africa next year.
 
The agreement will see highlights of the 2009 championship, which begins at the end of March with the Bahrain Grand Prix of the Sea, screened by the pay-television channel provider across Sub-Saharan Africa.
