Zapcats Fly at Watergate Bay

As I’m sure everyone will agree Rounds 3 & 4 of the Zapcat National Championship were simply fantastic. WatergateBay, Newquay hosted the weekends racing which made up not only Round 3 & 4 of the National Championship but was also Rounds 1 & 2 of the King of Surf.
 
The waves weren’t as big as some of the racers are used to at this gorgeous location but the 2 foot swell made for some exciting racing. Along with clear sunny skies the spectators on the beach couldn’t ask for more.

2008 ZAPCAT CHAMPIONS ANNOUNCED FOLLOWING RYA APPEAL

The Zapcat National Championship finished with rounds 13 & 14 of the championship at WatergateBay, Newquay on the 19th & 20th September. It was an event full of mixed emotions for the 2007 National Champions Pegasus Vortex racing, with pilot Mick Pritchard breaking his back during the event, and replacement pilot Neil Fraser and co-pilot Baz Minns pulling it out of the bag to hold on to the 2008 championship title ahead of rivals Commando Predator by 15 points.
 
Mick was released from hospital on his road to recovery but faced with the news that their championship title was under appeal. Commando Predator had questioned the eligibility of Neil Fraser replacing Mick Pritchard after his accident left him incapable of continuing to race.

Dramatic finale to 2008 Zapcat National Championship season at Watergate Bay

ZAPCAT CHAMPION BACK ON TOP

Last weekend saw the 2008 Zapcat National Champions Pegasus Vortex Racing head the to the annual RYA Powerboat Racing Awards Ceremony, at the De Vere Royal Bath to receive their 2008 Trophy.

Pegasus Vortex racing won the Championship back in September but Pilot Mick Pritchard had not been presented with the Zapcat Championship Trophy at the time as he was hospitalized following a broken back from the Friday’s racing at Watergate Bay.

As all the Champions from the sport gathered to receive their accolades from the year’s racing, amongst them were World Champion Powerboat P1 Evolution Driver James Sheppard, and World F2 Champion Colin Jelf, and offshore World Class 3C champion Navigator Peter Phillipson..

The Zapcat season kicked off in style when 28 teams lined up for the first green flag of the season to drop. A mixture of seasoned racers and rookies were met by a warm welcome from new organisers ZCR Ltd. With perfect blue skies and choppy conditions the scene was set.

Thousands flocked to Bournemouth’s beaches to see if Reigning champion Mick Pritchard’s predictions for the season would be correct. In division 2 Zapcat 09 Delta Jets/Marin Subsea got off to a dominating start in their heats with Westgate Zapcat 28 also proving their place at the top of the division. Also racing strong were Zapcat 39 Cat in the Hat and Royal Marine Team Commando Spirit in Zapcat 41 returning from last year.

ZAPCATS - WATERGATE BAY BECKONS THE BRAVE

In just 5 days Zapcat Racers will be faced with the might of Mother Nature as the 2009 National Championship heads to the mecca of Zapcat surf racing; Watergate Bay.

Not only do they have to contend with the other competitors but they also do battle with the mighty Atlantic swells that Watergate Bay is famous for.

June the 13th & 14th will see Watergate Bay host rounds three and four of the National Championship, these will also count as the first two rounds of the King of Surf contest. A highly coveted title that is often more sought after than the National title.

ZAPCATS - BLUE SHEETS LEAD THE WAY IN WATERGATE

24 Zapcat teams brave the surf conditions Watergate Bay’s Extreme Academy provided us with today in the first Round of the 2009 King of the Surf competition.

Racers were faced with the some of the best surf the venue has seen in recent weeks, conditions started in the morning at 3.5ft building to 5ft rolling swells in the afternoon.
 
Expectations and apprehensions were high as the days racing got underway with a couple of the teams feeling the force of the waves as they read the waves wrong and went for early swims.

ZAPCATS - WAVES AND WIPEOUTS AT WATERGATE

Sunday was met with more of the same glorious conditions that the feisty Zapcats excel in and with two teams opting out for the days racing 23 Zapcats lined up for the thrills and spills ahead.

Cornish team Doyster Blue Sheets Racing Zapcat 73 got off to a strong start in Division 2 and took four wins out of their 5 heats in the day, unfortunately getting caught out by a wave in the fifth and flipping their Zapcat. In addition Team Championship Team Relentless 2; Dangerous Brothers Zapcat 74 and Nine Lives Zapcat 35 were battling strong to take top 2 positions in most of their heats.

Blue Sheets Racing 1, Zapcat 03 continued their domination of the 2009 season taking another 5 heat wins in division one. Although several of the division one teams were pilling on the pressure including Team Speedy Hire, Zapcat 38 Daren Ford and the youngest co-pilot in the championship Sam Hunka.

Around 30 Zapcat racing teams will return to Bournemouth’s bustling beach this weekend for Rounds 5 & 6 of the Zapcat National Championship. 

Bournemouth’s beach provides the perfect location for fast furious action from these feisty little powerboats, with all the action happening right next to the Pier providing the public with an awesome viewing platform straight from the beach.

The 2009 Zapcat National Championship was launched on Bournemouth’s Beach back in May when thousands lined the promenade to make the most of the British weather and all the action.

ZAPCATS - CATFIGHTS IN BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth’s bustling beaches played host to round 5 of the Zapcat National championship today, and as hoards of people descended on the beach 26 teams lined up to do battle.
 
Conditions were perfect with blue skies and an onshore breeze producing Bournemouth’s famous chop to make racing that little bit more interesting for the teams. Organisers introduced a tactical course that would mean that flat out speed would not be enough racers had to think about when to take a tactical pit lap to get the clean water and hopefully take the lead.
 
In division 2’s heats Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 from Cornwall Charlie Brickle and Adam Bushrod got off to a storming start dominating their heats along with Seavation Zapcat 10, Alex Jordan and David Pay.

ZAPCATS - CHAMPION TO STEP DOWN FROM TOP SPOT

It is about time to say farewell to Mick Pritchard as a racer and welcome him on to the beach as part of the Championship Management team. Mick competed in his first full season in 2006, following lots of practice he and his new co-pilot Baz Minns secured their Rookie Championship very early on and finished 4th in the National Championship with a second place in the Southern Championships.

2007 was a full on assault on the title with the Nationals sewn up before the season closing event, but the double of King of the Surf was their target and they carried this off in style with maximum points!

2008 was all about defending both titles - consistency, attention to detail with some very skillful and at times audacious driving meant that they were on target for both, despite fierce competition.

BLUE SHEETS RACING BLOW COMPETITION AWAY AT BOURNEMOUTH

The Zapcat season started off in style this weekend as 28 teams and thousands of people descended on Bournemouth’s beaches for The Tohatsu Bournemouth Grand Prix and to enjoy the summer’s perfect weather.

The new points system, which was announced at the start of the season, provided some interesting movements between divisions after Saturdays racing with 4 teams gaining promotion to Division 1. Also entering into the top division for the days racing were the formidable 3 times champions Martin Wilcox and Will Evans in Zapcat 04 Wet Willy 2: Wilcox and Evans who are both employed by Tohatsu decided to make a late entry into the Tohatsu Grand Prix although they will not be competing in the full season.

ZAPCAT RACING - CELTIC CUP AND HOME NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP IN BRAEHEAD THIS WEEKEND

Zapcat Racing returns to Scotland this weekend the 12th & 13th September for rounds 3 &4 of the Zapcat Celtic Cup. The World’s largest one design powerboat championship will see around twenty teams compete on the River Clyde at Braehead shopping Centre as part of the centre’s 10th Birthday celebrations to walk away with the title of Zapcat Celtic Cup winners.

The first two rounds of the Celtic Cup were held on the 22nd & 23rd August at Edinburgh were the racing was tight and action packed as hundreds lined the Ocean Terminal balconies to watch the action that saw current championship leaders walk away with the Edinburgh Grand Prix title and lead in the Zapcat Celtic Cup.

ZAPCAT CHAMPIONSHIP AIMS HIGH AT WATERGATE BAY FINAL

We’re now just a day away from the final event of the Zapcat National Championship 2009, and I know it gets said every year but this years looks set to be the closest run contest yet.

Ok, so it looks like but Bluesheets Racing 1 Zapcat 03, Craig Davis and Rob Martin have closed the door on the rest of the teams catching them but as last year taught us, at Watergate anything can happen and usually does and with 200 points still up for grabs they could still be caught.

The real battle will be for 2nd & 3rd positions with less than 100 points separating current positions 2nd – 6th in the championship these two positions will be a tightly fought contest with each team still having everything to play for.

ZAPCAT RACING - AWARDS DINNER CONFIRMS RESULTS

Last weekend saw the final event of the 2009 Zapcat National Championship in Watergate Bay, Newquay. Following two days of spectacular action packed racing the results were in, points were confirmed and calculations made whilst Post race scrutineering took place and with the all clear from the ZCR Technical Team the Results were confirmed.

Presentations took place at an Oscar styled awards dinner at Watergate Bay Hotel on the Saturday night. Where racers drank, joked and reminisced on the season past and planned, plotted and welcomed the thought of the new season ahead.

As we head towards the winter months we do at least have 2010 and the Anniversary of a decade of Zapcat Racing to look forward to.

It is time to announce some of our very exciting plans for the forthcoming year with one of the most comprehensive calendars ever!

We will be mixing up lots of racing with some fun events too!

The feedback that we have received to date is pretty much unanimous, it has been a difficult, hectic but very successful year, with some great innovations, new venues and a real buzz about next year and that the season finished way too soon!

Ok everyone here goes.... remember this is provisional and as each venue / date is confirmed we will let you know.  As promised there will be a minimum of eight Championship Grand Prix Events, we are however working to provide two extra GP Events as part of the Championship, more news to follow on this soon.

Hopefully this will give everyone a good idea of the planned dates for next year, realistically there shouldnt be too many changes to this calender but please do not start booking time off / holidays or start making any travel / accommodation arrangements just yet, as dates and venues may be subject to change until confirmed.

ZAPCATS - AWESOME CROWDS WELCOME RACERS TO BRAEHEAD

Braehead welcomed Zapcat Racing with braw weather and awesome crowds, as 20 teams took part in the 3rd  Round of the Zapcat Celtic Cup and the inaugural round of the Home Nations Championship. The strong tidal pull of the Clyde and cross winds on the river was creating some flighty conditions for the racers as they took their National colours in a home nations battle.

Marin Subsea/Delta Jets, Zapcat 09 Pilot Ashley Chappell and Chris Rex racing for Scotland under their sponsors flag were flying from the word go and looked like an unstoppable team as they carried on their lead in the Celtic Cup.

ZAPCATS - MARIN SUBSEA/DELTA JETS TAKE THE CELTIC CROWN

This weekend saw the final two rounds of the inaugural Zapcat Celtic Cup; 4 rounds of racing staged over 2 weekends one hosted by Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh, the latter by Braehead Shopping Centre Glasgow.

19 teams made it to Braehead to carry on the action in the Celtic Cup and to also battle it out for their Nation in the Home Nations Championship. 

Teams from England and Wales made the journey to take on their Scottish counterparts in what was set to be a rousing battle of Britain.

ZAPCAT RACING - BLUE SHEETS TAKES THE TITLE

The Zapcat Racing National Championship was decided today at Round 13 of at Watergate Bay, Newquay.  Zapcat 03, BlueSheets Racing 1 Craig Davis and Rob Martin were favourites to take the championship going into the penultimate event and securing a place in the days final would cinch the deal.

Team Relentless got off to a storming start, with Zapcat 77, Exe Jets Rob Wickham and Graham Hay were taking high finishes in their heats along with Relentless –Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 Charlie Brickle and Adam Bushrod in their respective divisions.

Zapcat 38, Speedy Hire Daren Ford and Sam Hunka were storming away in their heats with Zapcat 25, Rana Park Neil Fraser and Jeremy Nazarin, fighting out with the second and third places in the championship still in contention.

ZAPCAT RACING - CLEAN SWEEP FOR BLUE SHEETS AT WATERGATE

Saturday saw the final round of the 2009 Zapcat National Championship at Watergate Bay in Newquay.

22 boats competed for the final points in their championship campaigns, Friday’s racing had seen Zapcat 03 BlueSheets Racing 1 Craig Davis and Rob Martin secure enough points to take them clear and uncatchable making them the 2009 Champions.

But with the King of Surf title still up for grabs and 2nd and 3rd still undecided tensions were high heading into Saturdays racing as teams were working out what results were required for them to achieve their final goals.

Not a last minute attack of "Bah Humbug" just frustration that so many decisions & meetings are now delayed until after the New Year!  The team has been working on so many projects, news should start to come through thick & fast from mid January onwards.

New venues have been found, old favourites & some past classics revisited, funding applications made, meeting prospective, new & existing series sponsors and new race teams, received proposals from media agencies, whilst the safety team & RYA officials have kept busy reviewing & improving procedures, policies and revising 2010 rules. (Revised 2010 Branding document is already available for download and the new rules will go up over the next few days).

BLUE SHEETS RACING CROWNED YOUNGEST ZAPCAT CHAMPIONS TO DATE

#3, Blue Sheets Racing 1,  Craig Davis (21) and Robert Martin (21) have been crowned the 2009 Zapcat National Champions, making them the youngest champions in the contests 9 years.

Davis started racing in 2005 and it wasn’t long before he teamed up with Martin to produce a formidable young team in the World’s Largest One Design Powerboat Championship. In 2007 they secured second place in the championship and in 2008 third narrowly missing the top spot on both occasions.

When the Green flag dropped at Bournemouth in May for the beginning of the 2009 campaign, it looked like it may finally be their year as they took wins in every heat, both days finals and the first Grand Prix title of the season. A long winter of training saw the youngsters on top of their game and leading the championship from day one.

Zapcat racers were again faced with perfect racing conditions today as they lined up on Bournemouth’s glorious beach for round 6 of 14 of the Zapcat National Championship.

Sun worshippers and powerboat racing fans flocked to the beach to catch all the action as the first green flag of the day dropped at 12noon. The onshore winds that had provided choppy swells for the racers to contend with in Saturdays racing had dropped and racing was not faltered by any red flag incidents as the racers showed their skills and team work that’s vital in Zapcat Racing.

ZAPCATS - PLYMOUTH SEES LARGEST FLEET SINCE SPANISH ARMADA

Blue Sheets 1 and Royal Marine Commandos (State of Mind) size each other up.This weekend sees Zapcat Racing head to Plymouth for the first time in 9 years of racing. Plymouth has played host to the likes of Class 1 and the Honda Formula 4-Stroke association always seeming to favour the larger Offshore classes, but now it’s our turn. - Never will Plymouth have seen so much close up action or so many races during 2 days.

Plymouth will provide a perfect location for spectators of the sport as the Hoe provides an awesome natural amphitheatre looking down on the racing from a superb angle, and it’s sheer rock faces and swells could bring some interesting racing conditions for the Zapcat competitors.

ZAPCATS - WORLDS LARGEST ONE DESIGN POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP IS PLYMOUTH BOUND

July 11th & 12th will see Zapcat Racing the Worlds largest one design powerboat championship head to the Plymouth Sound for rounds 7 & 8 of their National Championship.

Around 30 of the feisty little catamarans will battle it out over two days in 16 heats  racing for the title of Plymouth Zapcat Grand Prix winners.

Amongst the teams will be 3 Royal Marine teams based in Plymouth and two teams from the relentless teams, in All the Gear, No Idea, Zapcat 05 and The Exe Jets, Zapcat 77. With such a strong local contingency, action will be even faster and more furious than before with each team vying for glory at their home event. Pressure will also be on as Team Relentless take on Team Go Commando in the bid to secure the team championship.

ZAPCATS - CLOSE CONTACT IN PLYMOUTH

Zapcat Racing was met with wet and windy conditions as the World’s largest one design powerboat championship came to Plymouth. 25 Zapcat teams made the trip to Plymouth waterfront to compete in Rounds 7 & 8 of the Zapcat National Championship.
 
Onshore winds were providing a choppy swell in the Sound which may prove to create interesting conditions for the racers if the wind picked up more.

As the days racings got underway L&O Meats, Zapcat 75 had drafted in local Royal Marine Ryan Allingham to drive for co-pilot Martin Jerome with his normal pilot unavailable. Ryan who was unable to race the full season due to work commitments this year showed his usual formidable racing skills as they progressed through the division 2 heats securing a strong place in the days final.

ZAPCATS - BLUE SHEETS TRIUMPH AGAIN IN PLYMOUTH

Sunday’s racing was met by cloudy blue skies with gusting winds of around 28mph, creating a whole different obstacle for the Zapcat teams to contend with. The winds were lifting the noses of these light weight (150kg including engine) inflatable catamarans meaning the co-pilots had their work cut out for them distributing the weight in the boat to avoid being flipped over.

Division 2 got off to a flying start with returning racers in Smart ABC, Zapcat 07, Dave Paget and Tony Cooper, fixing engine gremlins they had during Saturday’s racing and leading the way in the division 2 heats. Also enjoying the feisty conditions, were Contact Wait Out, Zapcat 14 piloted by Paul Holt with Co-pilot Helen Redwood.

ZAPCATS - WELSH BOYS VICTORIOUS IN BARRY

Zapcat Racing brought the action to Barry Island today and despite the wet and windy conditions spectators turned out in force to catch the action.

With ever changing conditions racers were faced with constant swells and relentless wind. Local team Westgate Zapcat 28, Pilot Charles Morris and Co-pilot Ed Morris were looking to make the most in familiar waters to make up for a poor result at the last event in Plymouth.

Smart ABC, Zapcat 07, Pilot Dave Paget and Tony Cooper dominated the division 2 heats with Welsh pilot Charlie Brickle in Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 and Stepson Adam Bushrod piling on the pressure.

ZAPCAT RACING ANNOUNCES CELTIC CUP AND HOME NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the return of Zapcat Racing going North of the Border - 22nd & 23rd August we will be in Edinburgh for National Championships Rounds 11 & 12 and again on the 12th & 13th September in Braehead near Glasgow for the Braehead & Clyde Waterfront Home Nations GP, a Special Event as part of the Celtic Cup. (Overall winner from both Scottish Events).

We had not planned on introducing a double header in Scotland until 2010 but the opportunity arose, so we had to take it - this means a Special Event in Scotland, with hopefully another Special to follow in October to be announced soon.

After a 3 year absence Zapcat Racing the World’s largest one design powerboat championship returns to Scottish waters as they head Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Zapcat Grand Prix on the 22nd & 23rd August.

Racing at Leith Docks, Edinburgh will see the National Championship head to another brand new racing location for the series as they battle it out during rounds 11 & 12 of the 14 round championship.

Twenty Zapcat teams took the high road to Edinburgh for rounds 11 & 12 of the Zapcat National Championship today. They were greeted by Scottish sunshine, gusting winds and superb crowds creating fantastic conditions for the inaugural Edinburgh Zapcat Grand Prix.

Rookie Championship leaders in division 2 travelled from Southampton for the Grand Prix, Certain Death, Zapcat 21 pilot Luke Wills and Kevin Lott were determined to turn up their championship campaign after their long journey.

Rounds 11 & 12 of the Zapcat National Championship saw 20 of the 2009 Zapcat teams head to Leith Docks in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Crowds lined the Ocean Terminal Shopping centre to watch the racing as all the action unfolded over the course of the two days.
 
Having made the long journey from the south coast current championship leaders Bluesheets Racing 1, Zapcat 03 Craig Davis and Rob Martin were determined to make an impact north of the border to take them one step closer to the 2009 title.

ZAPCATS INVADE SCOTLAND - DRAMBUIE PURSUIT ON ITV4 TONIGHT

Back in May a team of Vortex instructors and Zapcat competitors headed to Skye in Scotland to be part of the Drambuie Pursuit ’09.

The Drambuie Pursuit is an adventure race through the Scottish Highlands celebrating the gallant flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie, for whom the secret recipe for Drambuie was created in 1745.

Participants climb, bike, canoe and archer their way through the 100-mile one-day event, paddling across the River Ness and tracing the steps of the prince when he was defeated at the Battle of Culloden.

ZAPCATS - BLUE SHEETS TAKE SUNDAY AS SPEEDY HIRE CLINCH WEEKEND VICTORY

Sunday’s racing was met with sunshine as the racers lined up to take part in Round 10 of the Zapcat National Championship in Barry Island. The weather had improved and conditions seemed calmer so officials introduced a tactical pit lap into the course to add another twist into the mix.

In division 2 Smart ABC, Zapcat 07 Dave Paget and Tony Cooper were off to a flying start, along with Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 Charlie Brickle and Adam Bushrod as they dominated the heats. Still celebrating their win from Saturdays racing local team Westgate Zapcat 28, Charles Morris and Ed Morris were still on a high and confident they could repeat the result at their home event.
