ZAPCATS RECEIVE SCOTTISH SUNSHINE AND WARM WELCOME IN EDINBURGH
ZAPCATS RECEIVE SCOTTISH SUNSHINE AND WARM WELCOME IN EDINBURGH

Twenty Zapcat teams took the high road to Edinburgh for rounds 11 & 12 of the Zapcat National Championship today. They were greeted by Scottish sunshine, gusting winds and superb crowds creating fantastic conditions for the inaugural Edinburgh Zapcat Grand Prix.

Rookie Championship leaders in division 2 travelled from Southampton for the Grand Prix, Certain Death, Zapcat 21 pilot Luke Wills and Kevin Lott were determined to turn up their championship campaign after their long journey.

Also turning on the pressure as the championship campaign steps up following the recent discards were Current Championship leaders, Blue Sheets Racing 1, Zapcat 03 Craig Davis and Rob Martin also making the long journey from Southampton.

The crowds lined the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre as the action got underway at 12 o’clock and in the flat conditions the action was fast and furious. In the penultimate event in the championship there was everything to play for and in also the first round of the 4 part Celtic Cup.

Making a come back to racing late in the season, Happy Racing, Zapcat 46 Jason Porter and Lenka Jencova-Bednarikova were playing a tactical game and getting fantastic results, until disaster struck when they popped their hull in the division 2 final.

In the flat conditions the Final was extended to 7 laps Certain Death, Zapcat 21 pilot Luke made the most of his pole position to get off to a flying start and lead the 7 lap race the whole way round taking an early pit lap to take advantage of the clean water. Who the Hell Zapcat 44, Father and Son Steve and Bobby Pidsley were hot on the heels of Certain Death the whole way. Nine Lives, Zapcat 35 with stand in racers,  Neil Bainbridge and Patrick Moger, made the most of the extra laps to pit on their last lap and take the bronze medal position behind Certain Death and Who the Hell respectively.

In division 1 the gloves were off with the top of the table so tight and every team chasing to catch the current leaders Blue Sheets Racing 1. Capitalising on their Grand Prix win in Barry at the last event Speedy Hire Zapcat 38, Daren Ford and Sam Hunka had a storming day and went strong into the days final. Blue Sheets Racing 1, Zapcat 03 Craig and Rob got off to a flying start with Father and Son Cat in the Hat, Zapcat 39 Jim and CJ Crooks closing them down at every corner, both took an early pit lap giving Speedy Hire clean water to gather some momentum. Speedy opted for a pit on their second lap and slotted in infront of Cat in the hat to the silver medal position.

Positions were held so Blue Sheets Racing 1, Zapcat 03 Craig Davis and Rob Martin took gold followed in to the silver medal position by Speedy Hire’s Daren and Sam. Completing the line up was Cat in the Hat’s Jim and CJ Crooks.

So with just three rounds before the Champions are crowned can anybody catch Blue Sheets Racing 1. If one thing’s for sure there will be plenty of teams out there trying to beat them when the green flag drops for tomorrows racing in Leith Docks at 12 noon.

ZCR Ltd would like to offer special thanks to Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre, Forth Ports Plc, GMFCo, Leith Harbour Master, Edinburgh City Council and Councillor Cardownie – Chair of Festival and Events for making the event happen and to all the racers and supporters for attending.
