Stokes Bay, Gosport saw an explosive start to the 2008 Zapcat National Championship where 26 teams turned up to battle for the National Championship, with Red bull supporting all the racers they were energised and excited about getting back out on the water.
Returning Champions Pegasus Vortex Racing, Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns showed the fleet why they became championship last year and won their first race with boat 03 Predator, Bligh Julius and Simon Butters closely on their tail.
With 8 rookie teams out on the water racing for the first time, division 2 was all to play for as they tried to show exactly what they could do. Division 2 final saw rookies Peter Bonham Christie and Duncan Scholes in boat 59 Team 59 take an early lead and bank their 1st podium position and a place in division 1.
Rookie brothers Nial and James Hoddinott team 73 Boat Register also found themselves on the podium followed by boat 20 Dot & Dab Nigel Christian and Darren Northwood.
In division 1 reigning champions Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns boat 01 Pegasus Vortex Racing gained an early lead with 03 Predator Bligh Julius and Simon Butters closely behind. I think there may be some close racing between these two boats this season!
Adelle Richardson took her brothers place and raced with her dad Greg Richardson for the first time and managed to scoop up the final podium position in division 1.
The sun came out on Sunday and we saw more close racing between boat 01 Pegasus Vortex Racing and 03 Predator.
Unfortunately boat 37 Go Commando State of Mind weren’t so lucky and had to retire one of their heats due to engine mounts braking, bad luck Richie, but I’m sure we’ll see him fighting fit for the next event at Watergate Bay.
Rookies 59 were promoted to division 1 on Sunday and showed the experienced racers what he’s made of. This boat is definitely worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season.
Boat 35 Nine Lives Charles Brickle and Adam Bushrod had a bit more luck on Sunday and found themselves 1st in the division 2 final followed by fellow rookies Graham Hay and Rob Wickham team 77 The Exe Jet’s and the Commando boys Peter Royston and Andy Farmer boat 41 Commando Spirit came in 3rd.
Division 1 again saw 1st and 2nd place go to team 01 Pegasus Vortex Racing, and 03 Predator.
In 3rd place saw Mick’s team member boat 88 Team Bladerun, Tristan Haigh and Mike Hammer.
