Watergate is always an exciting venue and this weekend didn’t disappoint.
Nial and James were moved up to the first division after Bournemouth and Saturday was a steep learning curve for both of them; Nial having never driven in surf and James never having been in surf before in the Zapcat.
They were placing in the middle of the pack, but it was a slow going day with many restarts:the last I heard the tally for flipped boats on Saturday alone was 17 and that doesn’t count the many men overboard. Speaking of which…in their fourth race on Saturday the boys managed to both fall out of the boat (see pictures) and then their final race James got bumped straight out of the boat.
Fortunately neither were hurt but they didn’t make the final and were bumped back down to division 2 for Sunday.
Sunday’s surf was very much the same as Saturdays and a few teams decided to pack it in and watch instead.
It was good to be back in the same division as Charlie and Adam from Nine lives who are also from Cornwall and have previously been really strong competition which was proven by them gaining pole position in Sundays final.
The boys had a strong day but again both decided they fancied a swim so placed third on the grid in the final, the final started off really competitively but about twenty seconds in the red flag was up and Nine lives sped back in driven by Adam after pilot Charlie had been barged right out of the boat, he was understandably disappointed as a gold at Watergate is always coveted by the Cornish teams.
Two restarts later and the boys soared over the finish line in first place.
Congratulations to Blue Sheets I on their unbroken winning streak and to them and Blue Sheets II for keeping hold of the team championship.
