When we said we were off to Barry Island everyone smirked and chuckled, so we didn’t hold out high hopes. How wrong we were; with a beautiful sandy beach and the friendliest locals we have ever found, Barry Island is a fantastic venue.
The weather was the only let down on Saturday, with a lumpy sea, wind and drizzle keeping spectator numbers low. There were a few flipped boats and men overboard, but overall outstanding racing from the majority of the teams.
The boys started out optimistic but with Nials new co-pilot Alex having only been in the boat once before it was a steep learning curve for him, especially the beach starts, but he took to it like a duck to water.
Speaking of which, he did go for a little swim when the Dangerous brothers stand in pilot thought it would be fun to see how far he could ram them up a buoy.
Alex flew about four feet in the air and cartwheeled into the water, fortunately, there was no damage to the boat and they made it through the rest of the day, but not the final.
Sunday with better weather and a calmer sea the boys had a more successful time; they got their beach starts together and started to pull some pretty good racing out of the bag.
They made the div 1 final at last and got a seventh so a slow but hopefully steady progression up div 1 working their way toward joining Craig and Robbie in Bluesheets Racing Zapcat domination!
