‘Keep your engine tuned to minimize emissions and cut fuel bills’
Oil and fuel contain hydrocarbons and heavy metals which can not
only affect human health but can also seriously damage our aquatic
environment. Only 5% of oil and fuel pollution in the water is from
catastrophic spills, the majority come from everyday sources such as
refuelling, engine emissions and oil leaks. The legal limit for oil
and fuel in water discharge is roughly one drop of oil in two litres
of water (15mg/l). Any more and wildlife and habitats can suffer.
One very simple way of preventing your boat from contributing to air
and water pollution is to tune and maintain the engine regularly.
This will not only cut emissions but also increase your engines
efficiency and lower fuel bills.
Engine Maintenance Tips
Keep the engine well tuned and operating efficiently.
Inspect fuel lines, hoses, hydraulic lines, valves, oil seals,
gaskets and connections for deterioration and leaks.
Fix leaks and replace worn parts.
When replacing hoses, new sections should be the right length to
prevent damage and leaks.
Tightly secure lines and hoses to prevent chafing, abrasion and
damage within the engine.
Install drip pans under all equipment that might leak. Make sure
you then dispose of any excess oil or fuel appropriately.
Try to avoid using solvents or toxic chemicals to clean engine
parts.
Transfer and remove all engine fluids with care, using funnels,
pumps, and absorbents to eliminate drips and spills and to keep the
bilge area clean.
A
good time to carry out maintenance such as this is just before you
put your boat to bed for the winter. You can then be sure that come
the spring the engine will be tuned, clean and efficient for the
following months of use ahead.
